Last night at the University of Tipton's lecture theatre,saw the opening night of Professor Stanley Moore's lecture tour,promoting his latest book "Mathematics for the Millenium".
Stanley arrived promptly onstage at 6:00pm, dressed in his customary beige cardigan and immediately got the crowd on its feet by launching into a full throttle version of,
xª+ yª + 2gx + 2fy + c = 0
This neatly segued into,
V = Ah
There then followed some banter with the audience,with Stanley saying it was "Good to be back."after an absence of nearly five years.He then announced,"You may know this one!"
And teasingly began the introduction of,
(PA)ª = PB)ª
Which of course had the entire audience joining in on the line,
(x+1)ª + (y-2)ª = (x-2)ª = (y+1)ª
Then there was a short break in proceedings while two stools were placed at the front of the stage.Stanley then performed an intimate 20 minute set on the slide rule,accompianed by Dr.Daphne Henderson on the abacus.
Lulled into a false sense of security,the crowd suddenly erupted
into a shaking frenzy of excitement when Stanley's famous "chalk squeak"
heralded the introduction of his anthem.
sinh(-x) = -sinhx
It was then, all too soon,time to go home.But Stanley came back after a
quick cup of tea and a few pulls on his pipe,to deliver a closing 30 minute
set of heads down,no nonsense,expotential and logarithmic functions.
All in all,a triumph.
