Yeah £640,000 is one hell of a lot of money, but with over 7,000,000 listeners then yes, he is worth it.

That is less than 10p a year from each listener. This is probably pretty obvious and some of you are probably thinking why the hell am I making a thread like this, but I am fed up of people calling him over paid.

I have no idea how he has stayed sane and as good as he is with all the flack he gets.

I imagine it's got something to do with how rich he is...

Who (recently) has called him over paid? Compared to some commercial radio jocks he is underpaid (according to the BBC anyway) and compared with Ross who gets 10 times that much I don't think it's a waste at all.

The thing with people like Moyles and Jonathan Ross is that they have to be seen as 'products' rather than 'people' when it comes to their wage. If you work for a normal company you may get a highly paid job, but you can easily be replaced and the product will continue to be sold.
The BBC want to keep Chris otherwise they lose one of their products which can never be replaced by anyone else. The money paid to these stars is not a reflection of the work they do - it's so high because the demand for these products is rife. The BBC need to pay this money because if they don't their stars will go elsewhere and everyone will complain about second-rate shows.

I always tell people who get annoyed at their wage to see it as a business investment rather than personal salary. I think it's easier to understand that way.

If you haven't already, take a wander over to Digital Spy's Broadcasting forum, you'll find all manner of enlightened and stimulating debate on this and related subjects... ;)

As I constantly say CHRIS IS NOT ON £600,000+, don't be fooled by the press!

The year that the figures where published (2004 or 6) he was paid that as a total sum by the BBC, that included all TV work and appearances, etc! So he is not paid £600,000 for his radio show.

Compared to others at the BBC I would say Chris is underpaid probably, on a listener comparision.

In Ross' case, isn't his 'salary' based more on what his production company is paid to produce the show????? ie Ross himself doesn't get all the money. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought I heard that and I wondered if Moyles had a similar arrangement?? After all, both Dave and Chris are not Radio 1 employees, they are freelance, as they have mentioned several times. Maybe I'm getting this arse about face.

I didn't realise Chris was ever a BBC employee. I assumed Dave was because wasn't he a BA when he first met Chris?

Dave definately was, as was, if I recall correctly, Chris back in 2001 as he complains about having to do the Good Friday & Easter Monday show, of which he never does these days.

I didn't think Chris was either, I would imagine the fact he doesn't do public holidays now is down to the fact that he is held in a much higher regard than when he first joined and probably for a while when he was doing afternoons.

I think he is worth every penny he gets. I think he works damn hard and gets a lot of shit thrown at him as well. Good luck to him.

I got over paid once, my work paid me for 3 weeks I didn't actually work for them. I never said anything and got away with it. Not that anyone needed to know that. I thought I would share it with you all :D

Does anyone get a bit irritated that Chris doesn't have time to do the Golden Hour? Matt Fincham did it the other week!
