Jo Whiley is excellent. It's a shame she is leaving but I suppose it's the right move at the right time for her.

I'm enjoying the show so far.

A massive mistake by Radio 1, Jo is a great broadcaster, they should have maybe kept her for one show a week along with her R2 show.

This is along the scale of sticking Annie Nightingale on at 2am.

Listening to the show now just reminds me of the awfulness that is Fearne Cotton. A travesty .

Edith will be off soon I reckon, wouldn't be that bad though

Edith is an utterly appalling DJ. People have a go at Fearne Cotton for being all sycophantic and saccharine, but she has nothing on Edith Bowman. I have been quite an avid radio listener for the best part of 20 years and she is the most cringe worthy DJ I have ever heard.

The shame is that she can actually be pretty decent when interviewing. But when left to her own devices she simply has nothing to say and just gushes and waffles on inanely at any old crap.

I wasn't a big fan of Jo Whiley but she did have a presenting skill, something of which Edith Bowman has lost over the years, I heard a brief snippet of her this morning and had to turn off, she just has no presenting skills anymore at all.

Was Moyles at her leaving do? Whiley was noticeable by her absence during Chris and Daves marathon and I get the impression she has a loathing for Chris and his leching of her during her morning shows. I have to say his humour is somewhat Benny Hill-esque but many feminists fail to see that side of him.

Another point that is somewhat forgotton is that Whiley coined the phrase Whileyism. That is, a male and female duo where the Female dumps the male partner to further her own career. Since she did that to Steve we have had Bowman and arguably Cotton do the same thing.

What makes you say that? Or are you just assuming that any woman who doesn't find Chris funny must be a feminist?...

Don't be ridiculous. She must be a lesbian.

Good advice, Ben knows the score ;)

Nah, I was just interested to know whether that assumption was based entirely on the interactions between Chris and Jo, or whether sparky had any other reasons for saying it.

I thought it was pretty well known that they didn't get on at first but now do really well.

Chris went to her house for her last daytime show.

I don't think she has any loathing for him at all, I know she didn't get on with him at first, however Moyles didn't get on with Peel, Mark & Lard and Nicky Campbell when he first joined (along with several others), however he since got on greatly with Peel and Mark & Lard but not Nicky Campbell, because he's a * that pissed off after Chris had been there just a few months.

I honestly wasn't saying that to troll , but i've heard Chris' style along the years and it generally goes along the route that a hot sexy chick is in an interview with him(or handing over to Fern) and he puts on the sexy music or makes smutty remarks that would have made Dick Emery blush. Something that made me laugh was when Fern popped along during the marathon and he made some remark about having some skinny love later on and she stops him in dead his tracks. I'm certain that its not meant in any way to demean the girls in the same way that Benny Hill et al didn't, its just that since the 80's it was politically incorrect for men to talk sexual to women.

The only female who I remember vividly having 'got it' and turned it around on him was Hayden Pannetiere and I urge anyone who hasn't heard that interview to download it.

Nah, I didn't think you were trolling, but it interested me cos I'm a feminist (proud holder of an MA in women's studies!) and obviously a fan of the show.

I do totally know what you mean about Chris' approach to the women he interacts with and I've never found it offensive really, but I can't quite pinpoint why - maybe just cos I always assume the women in question are successful and confident and can hold their own against him, and cos I trust him to know where the boundaries are and not stray into making a woman feel genuinely uncomfortable (altho I do think he's crossed the line once or twice, and he knew it!)

In fact the only time I find him offensive is when he makes comments about women's body sizes - like, for example, when he talks about Gok Wan's programmes and dismisses the women in them as "fat birds". There's probably some irony in that considering that he's forever branded "roly-poly" and "tubby" by the press, but I don't think that makes it okay for him to denigrate women (or just people) based on their size. It sometimes seems that he considers women who he doesn't find attractive (and I know I'd be one of those) less worthy as fans, and that's not a very pleasant thought. I s'pose given how much I like the show in general, I just forgive him those moments.

Listen, babes. Chris has a lot of respect for the chicks.

Seriously, though, I listened to a few very old shows recently, and Chris has come a long way, baby. Jesus, the casual homophobia was cringeworthy. I don't think it has ever been malicious on his part (he never "knew better"), but he has definitely wised up and toned down the potentially offensive remarks of late.

Agreed re the homophobia - we only have to recall the "that ringtone is gay" debacle :)

I think it's the March 2002 show in the archive, where he & Culshaw do an impression of Will Young, let's just say although funny the Daily Heil, etc. would be calling for his head these days. Although again I don't think there's anything malicious in it, just "how it was" back then.

Sat and today are up
