me too. I will be listening to all the shows from start again. Maybe Scott Mills but not sure. Won't be the same without Chris and the team. Radio 1 is making a terrible mistake

I'll either have a longer lie-in or watch a bit of telly in the mornings (recorded, not breakfast telly crap) and then use my ipod to listen to various bbc radio programmes I've downloaded whilst getting ready for and driving to work. It'll mean a bit of a change to my morning routine, but it's not the end of the world.

Out of interest, what will those who are planning to re-listen to old breakfast shows do once they've heard them all? Start all over again and keep listening to them ad infinitum? Surely it's better and easier to make a clean break immediately. All good things come to an end, and then it's time to move on. Be brave people, and go cold turkey come next Monday!

Just take a look at this statement again. You have no problems in life.

Lucky bastard.

Every silver lining has a cloud ;) @Emmy - if you think there are no problems in life just because of where you live then I want to smoke some of what you're smoking :) I totally understand what you guys are all saying about wanting to listen to re-runs of Chris' shows, but to those of outside of the UK who want to get tips for downloading UK shows and other culture, Chris and the team did a fantastic job of keeping us informed. I'll trust the opnion of anyone who has the taste to be completely in to the Chris Moyles show and so I'm hoping somebody can tip me off on to something that will offer us that complete Moyles experience. I'll bet Chris has hundreds of thousands of listeners outside of the UK who all feel the same way. And yes, I know it will never be as good.

I know everyone has problems really, I'm just jealous! What kind of thing are you looking for exactly? Do you only want recommendations of another breakfast show, or would shows similar in format to Chris' do you, or simply any decent BBC radio programmes?

Lots of discussion and recommendations already in this thread.

Apparently Zoe Ball will be filling in on the Radio 2 breakfast show from September 24th. First time Zoe Ball on breakfast since 2000. Dont know whether this is to gently move Moyles listeners on to Radio 2. Could be coincidence of course.

I would say coincidence. She has done a fair few fill-in shows on Radio 2 over her time there.

As a side note:
Liz Bolas from Wolverhampton wrote in to the Radio times magazine this week to say that she is going nowhere after listening round the wireless when Chris was on holiday to see what she could start listening to when he finishes only to find crap everywhere. The reply was to try Radio 6. I don't have digital radio (F.M. baby) so that is right out the window unless I turn the telly on to listen to the radio.

App for the phone or online seem to be the only alternative choices i can think of.

I got myself a pocket DAB in Asda two years ago for £35. It works a treat here in Bangor NI where the reception for TV & radio , never mind DAB, is notoriously crap. But fair play I've had very little trouble picking up a signal of the pathetically limited MUX we get over here in Ulster, though it goes a bit ropey at times.
I can recommend Shaun Keaveney on 6Music in the mornings. Not as good as the CMS because theres more music, but then again the music is infinitely better than Radio 1.....not that thats saying much. But i've had quite a few belly laughs listening to Keaveney's deadpan whinging when Chris has been on holiday.

I've read the posts on that other forum discussion and I can see everyone is having the same issue. I've got a slightly different take on it as living outside of the UK, as the CMS talks a lot about what's going on in the UK with respect to TV, tours and general culture (the type of stuff you get 24/7 from other sources if you live in the UK) and we found it a great way to keep up to date with what is happening in the UK. And then we love Chris for all the usual reasons as well, music, but not too much music, lots of hilarious banter that at times has you belly laughing uncontrollably i.e. a great way to start your work day. Any recommendations you can give for other breakfast shows that would help fill the massive void that the CMS will be leaving will be much appreciated. We gave Chris Evans a quick listen and found the music too middle of the road at times and Sean Leaveny on 6 but frankly he seemed very monotone and the general presentation seemed a bit smug - plus very little chat about UK pop culture and certainly no Moyles-esque belly laugh moments. I know some people on the forum have recommended both Chris Evans and Sean so will probably have to try them properly to see if initial reaction to them is incorrect. Here's hoping that you have the magic answer!

northernsteve wrote:the Beeb are missing a trick here. Launch a new, digital/online only station that targets 24-44 demographic. Transfer the Moyles show lock, stock and barrell to that and put Grimmy on Radio 1.

That new station has a mix of unique shows but also simulcasts Radio 1 and Radio 2 for programmes that have a crossover appeal. People like Jo Whiley, Dermot O'Leary, Coxy and Zane. Maybe play out some old sessions or complete John Peel shows.

In doing that, they have banished us old gits from Radio 1 and got their average listening figures down, provided a service for an underserved group, and increased sales of digital radios.

The thing about the BBC Trust wanting to leave the 30 somethings for commercial radio would be fair enough if the commercial sector would provide some imaginative programmes rather than the formulaic, voicetracked crap they churn out most of the time.

I agree almost entirely. The way I see it, there are two kinds of people over 30:

Type A: Those who, sometime in the 30s or 40s, decide that they're too old for all this new fangled pop "rubbish". They found music they liked 10/20/30 years ago, and they'd rather carry on listening to that thankyouverymuch.

Type B: Those who appreciate the classics from a few years ago, but are still interested in quality new music that they're not going to get introduced to by listening to the wrong station.

Radio 1 can keep Fern, Greg, Matt, and that lot on the basis that people in their target demo are only interested in DJs of a similar age. Chris has gone, Pete Tong went, Edith's on the back burner, Scott's been bumped off the drivetime slot, and it's only a matter of time before Coxy is deemed to be too elderly. They all need to be shifted to a new station and carry on doing what they're doing. Chris doing breakfast, Coxy/Edith amusing the housewives (and me, if I'm honest), Scott back on drivetime, and a Pete Tong/Judge Jules dance show in the evening. Perfect for the type Bs, and all the type As can shuffle off to R2.

btw, Jo Whiley can stay on R2. While she was on R1, I used to listen to her incompetent DJ skills, painful interviews, and constant mistakes with a mix of bemused amusement and incredulity that she still had a job. Wasn't sad to see her go.

I'm considering listening to Grimshaw, Evans, Today, Campbell and Keaveney for one day a week. A broad consumption of music and news on a weekly basis and maybe I realise one is far better than the others and stick with that.

Listening to old shows from the start is a no-go for me, for now at least. Hearing the team comment on a reality show from 2004 will always make me more hungry to know what they would say about the news of the present day.

Absolutley gutted today and I'm still at the denial>anger stage of grief. :(

I've always switched to five live at 10am, so I guess I'll be on there from 4am onwards. I can't stand commercial radio, radio 1,2 etc aren't for me. There won't be anything with the balance of music & chat that Chris & the team had, & with Radio 1's playlist, I'd rather just have the chat.

So the end if an era . . .
Yet again the British public who pay there tv licence get no say whatsoever what there hard earned cash is spent on. Just dictated to. A new boss moves in and destroys the best "record breaking" radio show that has ever been.
Personally I will not be listening to radio 1 at all from now and I hope a lot of other people follow suit.
Nothing against miles/James as they do an excellent job for the bbc, but are there cards now marked because of the "age" hated radio 1 boss?
Let's just hope that the ratings fall for the station now moyles is gone and prove he really was "the saviour of radio 1"

To be fair it's not Ben Cooper's fault - he's been given his orders to reduce the age group by the BBC trust (I guess)

If Ben hadn't got the gig then whoever came in after Andy Parfitt would have likely done the same thing.

It's annoying that there is nowhere really for us 30-40 somethings to go apart from commercial radio, which will be sponsored by some inane crap and have adverts every 5 bloomin' minutes.

We need Radio 1 1/2.

Oh right. No need for negative posts like that at this time. Anger was 3 months ago for me. It's now time for reflection and thinking about all the great stuff the show achieved.

They're not bothered about ratings, just the age of the people listening.

By the way, if anyone is interested in the story of why Radio 1 was repositioned as a youth station in the early 1990s, and therefore why Radio 1 aren't keen on keeping listeners over the target age, I recommend the book "The Nation's Favourite" by Simon Garfield. The author was given access to Radio 1 during that time, and it's a very good read. It was first published around 1998, and there's a chapter about the station's newest signing, a young lad from Leeds called Chris Moyles.

Spot on.

There is absolutely nowhere that caters for me as a 35-year-old. Radio 1 still remains the best fit for me. I am a million miles away from being ready for Radio 2.

I agree with a lot of the points made above, but how is Neil Grimshaw going to get thousands of teenagers or 20somethings to all of a sudden turn to radio 1? most younger teens are at school by 8:30 and will have the radio station dictated to them by the parent at home or on the school run,the 16-19 year olds are probably most in bed til 9:30 I feel sorry for the chap as it seems he is just stranded on his own with so called cool new music and the the odd bit of chat about what Peaches Geldolf or some one direction wolly are up to...who cares? My Kids also loved Chris show, even my youngest two used to sing along with the jingles. I know all good things come to a end..but what now for me?..The thought of breakfast tv makes me feel worse and my local radio is the stereotypical Alan Partridge fare, thank goodness for the archive provided by this great site.
