That new station has a mix of unique shows but also simulcasts Radio 1 and Radio 2 for programmes that have a crossover appeal. People like Jo Whiley, Dermot O'Leary, Coxy and Zane. Maybe play out some old sessions or complete John Peel shows.
In doing that, they have banished us old gits from Radio 1 and got their average listening figures down, provided a service for an underserved group, and increased sales of digital radios.
The thing about the BBC Trust wanting to leave the 30 somethings for commercial radio would be fair enough if the commercial sector would provide some imaginative programmes rather than the formulaic, voicetracked crap they churn out most of the time.
I agree almost entirely. The way I see it, there are two kinds of people over 30:
Type A: Those who, sometime in the 30s or 40s, decide that they're too old for all this new fangled pop "rubbish". They found music they liked 10/20/30 years ago, and they'd rather carry on listening to that thankyouverymuch.
Type B: Those who appreciate the classics from a few years ago, but are still interested in quality new music that they're not going to get introduced to by listening to the wrong station.
Radio 1 can keep Fern, Greg, Matt, and that lot on the basis that people in their target demo are only interested in DJs of a similar age. Chris has gone, Pete Tong went, Edith's on the back burner, Scott's been bumped off the drivetime slot, and it's only a matter of time before Coxy is deemed to be too elderly. They all need to be shifted to a new station and carry on doing what they're doing. Chris doing breakfast, Coxy/Edith amusing the housewives (and me, if I'm honest), Scott back on drivetime, and a Pete Tong/Judge Jules dance show in the evening. Perfect for the type Bs, and all the type As can shuffle off to R2.
btw, Jo Whiley can stay on R2. While she was on R1, I used to listen to her incompetent DJ skills, painful interviews, and constant mistakes with a mix of bemused amusement and incredulity that she still had a job. Wasn't sad to see her go.
