To say that Classic FM would go unchallenged would indeed be wrong - of course there will be others and not just one. Like you say it has to be different to what's already available - so it would have to be almightily different to what both the BBC and Classic FM already output - so in that case it most likely wouldn't be a music station as it's too similar to what is already out there, therefore unlikely Chris will ever move there (if indeed there is a "there". I doubt a new Virgin Radio - even with a move away from commercial music would be enough to topple Classic FM's sturdy position). Interesting debate - for sure - but not massively relevant to Chris's future at the moment.
They would never have a Mills/James/Moyles triple with nobody inbetween. Personally I think Greg and Scott shouldn't be so close in the schedule now (and personally I don't think that will be the case for long and R1 probably know that). A more likely scenario is Scott and Chris change places and Fearne and Greg stay where they are.

Back in February The London Paper reported that Richard Branson may be interested in acquiring this licence and launching a new Virgin Radio. The national commercial FM licences must be distinctly different from the BBC's national radio output, but I did have the thought that should the potential new licencee move away from classical music this could feasibly be a future home for Moyles.
There is still a while yet before this licence is assigned, if at all depending on Ofcom's future plans for FM licences.
Just thought i'd throw it out there - pure speculation - totally talking out my ass - but something to consider as and when he moves on - but for now, like millions of others, i'm enjoying the show and looking forward to at least another 10-11 months of it.

6.30am-Fearne and Reggies breakfast show
10am-Scott Mills
1pm-Greg James
3.30pm-Chris Moyles
7pm-Zane Lowe
what do you think? would be geat to have Chris on afternoons again!(assuming he gets fed up with the early rises of course)
