Now I haven't made my dislike of the recent Golden Hours very secret, as I'm getting bored with no songs being played that were pre-1990.

However, is it just my imagination, or did Chis play songs from the 80's when he first started doing the Golden Hour? Did he, or am I going mad? If he did, why doesn't he play anything pre-1990 anymore? My money would be on the management pushing their 'Radio 1 for da yoof' manifesto again, hence they only play songs teenagers would remember :D

During the fortnight of Golden Hours leading up to their 40th Anniversary, sorry Radio 1: Established 1967, the years were 1987, 1997, 1984, 2001, 1992, 1967, 1979, 1983, 1995, 1988. I would imagine that the music policy for those two weeks was different from each Friday since.

There is an argument for playing older tracks which would educate the younger listeners, but if their remit is to play new music and break new artists then they have no reason to play tracks from before the target audience was born. Since they only stick to one year for the first half hour I think they should touch on pre-1990 music, but ultimately it is a management/playlist issue.

It's * stupid and it's getting boring. If you are restricted to 13 years of music from a history spanning 40+ years what's the point in doing it? The 90's was dam good for music, from Rave, Grunge, and Indie, to pop and dance, but the earlier stuff from the 70,s and 80's also has it's place in music history and deserves to be played.

The breakfast show is about entertainment, not about pushing new music, the sooner the R1 bosses realise this the better.

They are seriously lacking a John Peel figure, someone who will push boundaries and not be scared to play something that isn't 'cool' or 'in'. Some of the stuff that gets on the playlist is questionable anyway, why would a few old classics a week hurt?

From what i've heard Chris say on the show, they're allowed to go back as far as 1990 (20 years of music) and probably beyond for the team choices on occasion. Where were you getting 13 years from, or was that merely to highlight the fact that they're being restricted whatever the actual span of years?

Well, i've never heard them play any later than 2003, and 2004 onwards is hardly 'golden', then again, anything after 2000 isn't.

Chris had a go at Aled once for choosing 'Crazy in Love' by Beyonce for his choice, so the 2003 thing was merely a number, simply because, as i said before, they haven't had the first half hour any newer than that.

I still can't get anyone to explain WHY they aren't allowed to go back pre-1990.

Point taken.

Genuine suggestion: have you contacted Radio 1 to ask for an explanation on their music policy for the Golden Hour?

Yes I have - I wouold hardly be moaning about not getting any answers if I hadn't asked the question. I have also asked Aled and Rachel both individually.

I do still enjoy the Golden Hour, even if they are limited to certain years.

However shame they won't venture back into the 80's, 1985 is a superb year for music & there's a huge number of tracks they could chose from:

Queen - One Vision
Simple Minds - Don't Your Forget About Me / Alive & Kicking
Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Mr. Mister - Broken Wings
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill
Echo & The Bunnymen - Bring On The Dancing Horses
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Cities In Dust
Paul Hardcastle - Nineteen
Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F
The Smiths - The Boy With The Thorn In His Side / How Soon Is Now / Shakespeare's Sister
Duran Duran - A View To A Kill
Level 42 - Something About You
Madonna - Material Girl / Into The Groove
Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA / I'm On Fire / Glory Days
Bryan Adams - Run To You / Summer Of '69 / Heaven
Billy Idol - White Wedding
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
Don Henley - Boys Of Summer
Prince - 1999 / Let's Go Crazy
Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World

I could go on, but I wont ;)

 Yeah 1985 is a fantastic year & I have fond memories of it as well which is rather odd, seeing as I was only 2 back then 8O

I too am dying to hear some older music played. Think of all the great 60s stuff they could play that a lot of the listeners may not have heard before - Beatles, Stones, Hendrix...same with the 70s. It seems a real shame.

The golden hour is a waste of time for two reasons. One is that the timeline is too restrictive and the other is that Chris almost without fail, picks terrible songs.

Chris and I must have opposite tastes in music because I cant stand the stuff he plays. The only bright spot is the second half hour because Carrie, Rachel and Dave sometimes pick decent tracks.

I pretty much stop listening after 9am on a friday now. Its a shame really that the final hour of the week is so dire and it is the only time I ever turn Moyles off.

I never listen either, mainly because I rarely hear the show live, and always skip the music when I'm listening back. I listen to the show for the banter, so they could play Franz Schubert all day for all I care :D

Totally agree with the last 3 comments, but also sometimes some songs Chris picks for the first half hour is songs you have heard on Dave's tedious link and even thats getting a little repetitive, not always but mostly.

Its Radio 1 management who have this stupid rule I'm sure if Chris had no resctrictions you would hear more 70s & 80s, would like to think he would anyway, if he can't do this time the golden nineties sorry hour was but to rest.

I did enjoy the hindu times by Oasis though, like Chris said, it's not one of those you hear everyday. What I'd like to see is a shake-up of all the music played on his show, because I mostly see it as adverts on the BBC. Because it can be forever Kanye West's older material even though Eminem has a new album out, I know the idea is to keep it all happy as hell, but sometimes I'd rather hear new cutting edge music than the sort of stuff you might hear on Aled's plodcast or down the gym. Theres only so many mornings you can wake up to the Black Eyed Peas - from the very second they played Boom Boom Pow I knew immediately it would be played to * death - because thats the fun-luvvin' hot rockin breakfast show draggin yo ass outta bed.

Songs at 9.15am are brilliant, I like the fact that feature has survived over the years, theres always new music to be had there.

In defence of Radio 1, they cant please all of the people all of the time, so, if I can't have old classics (which is fair enough) then I'll happily settle for new music if they dump the overplayed Kanye West type 'classics'.

The Golden Hour is actually something i look forward to every week. The reason is that, for at least an hour, you have the chance of hearing some decent tracks and songs you haven't heard in ages.

That's fine, they do play new music most of the time - but if the purpose of a feature is to play older songs, they should be allowed to use the feature to its full potential.
