The studio looks cool with that lighting! Looking forward to this...

OK, probably not the most incisive way to start a thread, but there you go. 8O

He certainly has. It's repeated on BBC HD straight after this if that's any use, by the way.

Perhaps you could explain to my 11 year old English Daughter Chris, who listens to your show every morning by saying in this programme that you hope your relations 'were not English'.

If I said what you did in public about a different Nation I would rightly get labelled predujiced or even worse. And then it seemed it was dissappoinment all round because some relation fought in the British Army and was not a terrorist it seems.

Totally disillusion with this and my daughter will not be listening to your show any more and asked not too. I would like to add I have nothing against Ireland or anybody just feel insulted thats all.

Oh shut you fanny.

Can you not see what he meant? All his life he believed he was Irish, and was proud of it, that's why he hoped he wasn't English.

I hope your daughter grows up to be smarter than you.

I'm English and wasn't offended by what he said. Because I know that with Moyles's record, there was a healthy dose of sarcasm involved. You'd have to be extremely sensitive to have taken that particular soundbite (a) in isolation, and (b) seriously.

Oh don't be so bloody rediculous. He hoped his family didn't all turn out to be English because he has spent 30-odd years being proud of the fact that he is Irish and sticking close to his Irish heritage. I am half Italian and very proud of it and would be bitterly disappointed to suddenly find out that I wasn't. If I was brought up in Italy then I would probably be proud of being half English, you learn to love something that is different about you.

Oh bless him. Did you see the tears? I found it all really interesting. It's weird how it makes you emotional tracing family trees, rationally you know your ancestors are all dead but it still tugs on your heart strings when you realise how they lived, their hardships, their triumphs and ultimately how they died.

Oh and how much fun is Dom gonna have tomorrow as Moyles means Slaphead!!??!!

(Side note to the idiot Crowsy............. Learn to spell, learn some grammar and learn that this is not Chris Moyles' site and he rarely visits here. If you had grown up believing you were one thing and then told you were another then you too would be shocked. TIT!)

S4B, you're right - you DO go through some funny emotions when you're tracing your ancestors. I did a lot of research on my family tree last year and found out some amazing stuff - and even though there wasn't even nearly as tragic as some of Chris's ancestors' fates, it does still bring a lump to your throat knowing your family history.

For a moment a thought he was actually going to mention Dom as they were discussing it! I imagine they'll all have something to say about him travelling on public transport in Dublin as well.

Fascinating show, and very interesting to see CM in that kind of thing as well. I get the feeling he gets his sense of humour straight from his Dad!

This show had to be the one I was least looking forward to seeing as this Chap surrounds himself with a**e kissing sycophants and believes his own bull***t about himself, but actually the level of humility shown by him throughout the programme has shown him to be quite likeable after all.
Message to all who found his remark about hoping his family weren't English offensive get a grip, if you were told all of your life your roots were somewhere else and there was a possibility that these tales were misguided you would be disappointed too , so cut him some slack,a familiar story of this Countries Government going back on promises - "fight for us and you can have Home Rule" another hollow promise , no wonder we are loathed throughout the world!!!

It was a good watch and I think Moyles came across well - joking about a bit to begin with then getting more serious as the story was told. It is strange if you think about it, there are probably loads of us with similar backgrounds (I know that at least one of my great-relatives was killed in the war) but we will likely never know much about it.

On another note - as it stands, a whole page full of compliments on last nights show. If the thread gets mentioned tomorrow, I wonder which post in particular might get talked about...

I really enjoyed that. I'm a quarter Irish myself, and my Irish ancestry is also very murky and sad, so I found it quite hard viewing at times! I know some of my family history on both sides, and it isn't very pretty, so I'm not sure I want to delve as deep as Chris did! To be honest, once you've found out one of your ancestors was hung for murder, it kind of puts a damper on the whole experience 8O

I ended up taping it (well I taped it to a DVD, don't know the correct term for that) so will give this a butchers tomorrow.

Crowsy, with all due respect you've really overreacted to a non issue.

First show I've watched of Who Do You Think You Are and thought it was great. Really got drawn into what is quite a harrowing history that's only just out of living memory. For only 5 kids out of 15 to survive is mind blowing (to quote Chris). The World War stuff was fascinating too, especially having visited Ypres myself.

On a lighter note, does anyone know what make of sunglasses Chris was wearing when he was in Dublin? I tried to read the name on the side but couldn't pick it out. Looked like 2 words of 4 letters each.

The programme itself was great, I would say the best one I've seen. I've listened to moyles a long time now and you know by listening to him he's proud of his Irish roots and tonight you could see how proud he is of it. He's won alot of people over with that show because even my parents said how nice and caring he is after watching the show and they used to hate him. The last bit had me close to tears when they spoke off this great grandad who fought in the war and what happened to him.
Great show.

Where anybody was from and what they are proud of is not the issue here, and you call me daft. grow up people. The way he implied 'that he hopes they are not English' was insulting. Can you imagine if someone said said that on TV about, Scotland, Wales, Ireland they would be riots. You people are naive to think that this sort of thing doesn't upset people? I found it offensive and think he is a bit of pratt but that is my own personal opinion and i'm entitled to it.

good program and suprisingly informative

I think what some people are trying to say is that CM seemd very p****d off that despite his ancestors being 'nationalists' they joined the british army, i think he laboured the point a bit too much with a romanticised view of the good old irish 'freedom fighter' as opposed to how we see them these days

easy to criticise when you feel its your bag but you have to remember how it turned out!! dont feed the fire
