well blame the internet, this man john ottway is an internet phenomenom. Add that to the placing of 59 for The Wurzels. Feeder are not a singles band remember and this track wasnt catchy enough to get into the top 10.

oh and he got to number 9

Cult musician John Otway has stormed into the top 10 - 25 years after his first chart success.

The 50-year-old is at number nine with Bunsen Burner, which features 1,000 of his die-hard fans providing backing vocals on the B-side.

Otway's first single (Cor Baby That's) Really Free, with Wild Willy Barrett, reached number 27 in 1977 and he was snapped up by Polydor for £250,000.

But his next release - Geneve - failed to impress the music-buying public and he disappeared into obscurity.

A cult following of fans on the internet kept Otway's musical interests alive and when they asked him what he wanted for his 50th birthday this year, he said a second hit single.

Otway is celebrating his new chart success with a sell-out gig at the London Palladium for 2,500 of the fans who helped him achieve it with a massive internet campaign.

Indie bands don't sell singles though do they, like Ash, the single Sometimes charted at something like 20, but it shifted x number of thousands of Free All Angels, the singles basically are promoting the albums. Getting to number one is basically about promotion, and how many TV shows you wh*re yourself around on in the week before release. End of. Who listens to the charts anyway other than 13 year old girls who wanted to know what number Gareth Gates is at!?

I love the way John Ottways song has entered at no 10 M+L covered this last week and it just goes to show what a farce the singles chart is.

Mostly 100% shite? Who else can see the complete nonsense that this comment is?

As for Feeder, top band, although their earlier stuff is far superior to anything they've released recently...

JJ72 are a great band, their debut album was great. But to be honest given Mr. Dions taste in music then he can't really critisise. And anyway Mr. Dion how can you critisise when you've never released an album yourself......

Regardless of whether you like the John Otway song or not; surely everyone must agree that it is amusing that a song that has had no air-play and that most of us had probably never even heard of shot into the top 10 ahead of other new entries Leann Rimes, Ian van Dahl and No Doubt that all had good air-play. It just goes to show that the music industry can't 'fix' everything.
