Hi Ross,

I too wanted to get into radio from a very early age. I work at the local hospital radio station also where I do a number of things including my own show. I've been there about 18 months.

I now also have a professional radio job as a Technical Operator for the local commercial station. It's really cool fun, and great experience.

whilst training and experience helps, its harder to make a dj an interesting person than it is to make an interesting person a dj.

I'd agree with you on that one....but are you calling me dull?

I've been involved with my local student station for the past two years, and I've done volunteer work for my local commercial station as well. They want to make me a TO (Technical Operator) but I haven't heard back from them yet. Then again, the fact that I've consistently slated some of their scheduling decisions in the past might have eliminated my chances. - jc

hmmm...that may affect their opinions slightly.

but then again they may see you as being someone who has constructive criticism and take you on board from that perspective.

Maybe, but I've really, really been criticizing them lately. On their own messageboards. And on MediaUK. More than once. A source tells me I've ruffled a fair few feathers there. - jc

I admire your guys effort and determination, i'm sure it will pay off.

However, at this early stage of your career, you have to realise that slating the station you work for is not a great move. When you start of in the industry, you must kiss ass and make friends else be a disgruntled radio dj in years to come.

that constructive criticsm stuff does not work. Some old talentless prick does not want a young, hungry talented employee to criticise their performance. You can have all the talent in the world, but not making friends with the right people will be a crucial factor. Just take a look at paul titley, the moyles america road trip winner who now works on the dave pearce show with the aid of a certain dj's intervention.

the moral- make 'friends' in the business, do not criticise for a while and work hard on your own ideas. Stick to your own ideas, agree with everyone else and always remain self critical.

Nablo and I used to do a radio show at my college, it was good stuff but we were turned down in most the places it was played, ie the caffetirria (I dunno how you spell it!), coz the old biddy serving lunch didn't like music unless it was Michael Ball!
