Now I read this article and I cant believe the front some people have. Here is the story

Virgin denies 'racism' jibe after axing rap
by Julia Day

Virgin Radio has been branded "musically ignorant" and "dangerously close to racism" for condemning R'n'B and rap music as "processed crap". R'n'B and rap stars such as Ms Dynamite, Roots Manuva, Craig David, So Solid Crew and Beverley Knight are riding an unprecedented wave of chart success and critical acclaim but Virgin has banned its DJs from even mentioning their music, let alone playing it.

The station has listed the genres of R'n'B and rap alongside pop acts such as Atomic Kitten, Gareth Gates and Westlife as "processed crap" on its website. On the site Virgin declares the station's boss "has had enough" of music ranging from the manufactured acts created by reality shows "to any R'n'B or rap act".

The new music policy comes after Virgin announced it was auditioning Page Three models as co-presenters for its breakfast show. The programme director, Paul Jackson, whose father is Fame Academy judge Richard Park, described the move as "a bit of fun".

But music industry insiders are outraged that the station's "real music" policy - which champions new and old rock bands - trashes urban music. Some even believe Virgin's attitude - which strongly dismisses a predominantly black music genre and includes only a handful of black artists on its playlist - verges on racism.

---------------------------------------------------
What is 1Xtra then? Is it then racist for playing only black music. Im not being all national fronty but for goodness sake, im sick of hearing Ja Rule every damn minute of the day. I switch off over to another station to find they are playing the same damn song. Some R N B is good like Beverley Knight but do Radio 1 play her after her song is out of the charts. Yeah right, they stick on Jennifer Lopez and Play instead.
Yes, he said it was a bit of fun, but its a real alternative to the dross spilled out from most commercial stations. Theres only so many times I can tolerate Kelly Rowland confessing her love to that bloke who cant shave Nelly. Who is the real racists in this. Is it Virgin or is it the BBC who labels 1xtra as a "Black" station?

Totally agree Uglybob. The real racists are the people who are everywhere constantly looking for the slightist hint of racism - these are patronising little white middle-class suburban wankers. This is laughably termed as 'Positive discrimination'. These people think all black people are good and all white people are bad. As you say one doesn't want to sound like the BNP, but I'm sick and * tired of this political correctness bollocks. It really makes my blood * boil!!!!

Isn't the Virgin target audience about 30? Most 30 year olds don't like rap music anyway, when you get to that age the majority go for the classic albums that were being played when they were about 14-20. Or is that just me?

what i dont agree with is banning a whole genre of music..... if a band or song is crap in someone opinion fine dont play it but you have to judge each one on its merits.... my favourite song at the moment is Paul Wellers but i've never heard it once on radio 1.

I love the fact that with Virgin I can be safe in the knowledge I'm not going to hear weastlife, Will Young, Ja Rule etc., but that I WILL be hearing classic songs like the lemonheads version of Mrs Robinson, The Stereophonics, Oasis etc..

Its getting too far fetched now, next they will be saying Music Channels on Television are racist - Kiss for playing more black artists - MTV2 against pop - MtvHits for being too poppy.

I mean, its individual taste and people are simply getting sick of the whole black music scene - I'm not into the majority of it. It isn't because of the colour of the artists' skin, its just the R n B style just doesn't do it for me, I dont like the songs but I dont have anything against the artist.

Gosh Virgin is right in doing so - as other stations pump out maufactured pop obviously there should be ones better than that to play better music, :) I can only listen to it through Sky, but I like and I suppose all the 1Extra is to provide another station to make a wider variant of music being played across the BBC, but it is more racist in the audience its trying to gain.

I agree woth Bob totaly.

Apart from Moyles, I listen to Virgin the rest of the time to avoid all the processed crap.

However, 1xtra cannont be considered racist, because you cannot be racist against a "minority".

I think you could be racist about anything these days - All you hear is, is that we (white people) are racist against blacks, that would mean being racist against a minority, in our country at least. But whats to say its not vice versa, but you never really hear much into that. You can be racist against any variety of skin, however big or small.

Yeah, but the point was, why have Virgin been branded racist just because they don't play black music, but One Extra only plays black music and that isn't branded racist. Racism works both ways.

Virgin are classed racist because they are not playing black music (black people are considered a minority). Their programming is aledgely aimed at white people. Hence they are considered to be racist.

1xtra cannot be considered racist because it plays black music to a minority.

Racism doesnt work both ways, you cannot in this day and age be racist towards a majority i.e white people.

I think that came out right :?

Of course 1Extra can be considered racist because they target black people. Therefore it is excluding white people. Do you know what the definition of racism is?
Racism does work both ways, you have to remember that there are more black people in the world than white.

Er? 1Xtra is targeted at fans of black music. Not black people specifically. Even if you're not target audience, you'd only be discriminated against if you were prevented from listening or phoning in for competitions and such. - jc

Enoch Powel had the right idea. Send them over in the boats to Britain gradually. Else the black man will end up holding the whip.

When it comes to the media, some would defend Enoch's vision.

No worries, I was able to use it :) Show is up, a[…]
