The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

I have just been listening back to the Pub Quiz today and I am staggered to hear that not only does Dave not know who the Home Secretary is, he has never heard of her. Hasn't he read a newspaper or listened to the news in the past eighteen months? How on earth can any responsible 37-year-old who is even slightly aware of the world around him, not have any idea whatsoever who the Home Secretary is?

The fact he guessed at Jack Straw genuinely makes me wonder if he knows which parties make up the coalition. I was disappointed Chris didn't know the answer either, but at least he made a reasonably educated guess and named someone who is actually a member of the cabinet.

I have defended Dave a lot on here, but that today was quite pathetic. Does he just walk around with his hands over his ears and his eyes shut? It's the Home Secretary for goodness sake!

Or am I being harsh?

Harsh.

I wouldn't have known, (have heard of May though)

Very harsh I would say.

As much as you'd like every responsible adult to know it, everyone has different interests and the fact of the matter is, not everyone pays attention to current affairs and politics!

Not everybody knows everything. Apart from the Eggheads, of course.

But this isnt about intelligence. I am not an intelligent person and I am not well educated either, but I am at least aware enough to know who the most senior politicians in the country are. Isn't it incumbent on all responsible adults to keep even slightly abreast of what is happening in the world?

I am all for enjoying the frivolous side of life, but surely we all check the news every day whether it is having a news app on your phone, or listening to the headlines on the radio, or reading a newspaper that does more than show pictures of half-naked women on page 3?

As I said, it isnt just that he didn't know who the Home Secretary was. He thought it was a Labour MP and had never even heard of the woman who is the actual Home Secretary!

And to think Dave sniggers away at people who havent heard of some phrase on CPC...

I wouldn't have got it either. I've heard of her, but would never have even thought to put her name. Indontbeven know what the home secretary is or what her job is, but that's because I'm ignorant when it comes to politics. Nothing bores me more.

Some people are simply not interested in politics / the government? I'm sure there is a perfectly good reason why he doesn't know.

Shouldn't the title of this thread be Theresa May. Whoooooooooooooooooo?

I would have been surprised if Dave had known who sho was.

I can handle people not being sure who the Home Secretary is, given the mess the current coalition has made of its cabinet so far. I definitely can't accept that anyone with their head anywhere other than under a rock has never actually heard of Theresa May, especially when given the context of politics.

I know who Theresa May is but I wouldn't know some of the things Dave knows. Point is everybody is different when it comes to knowledge.

There is of course the famous Teresa May, not the unknown Tory one.

So this subject must at least hold mild interest to you...

I wouldn't have got it either. I don't have the time of day for all that bollocks, politics is mentioned and I switch off. I see it as one of those things that 'will be what it will be'. I'd rather focus my energy elsewhere.

I don't think it's harsh at all, after all, Home Secretary is one of the four top posts - I would expect Dave to know who she is.

My education is nothing to do with politics, but I know who Theresa May is. This rather reminds me of the debate when Olly Murs didn't know what the census was.

Theresa May. Thought she was a violinist. Turns out I'm wrong. And also irresponsible.

Well Dave, for all his political ignorance - & who can blame him for steering clear of that steaming pile of vicious hypocrisy - is obviously quite an intelligent man.
Olly Murs is so dim that he needs watering & pruning occasionally. And thats me being kind.

No. I'm not saying Dave isn't an intelligent man, but I have to say the evidence which I pick up from listening to him on the radio doesn't actually support that premise. So I wondered what made it obvious to you?

This all assumes it actually matters who it is. When it comes down to it, it's another self-serving arsehole that will do what they want and to hell with what the people who voted for them (or didn't in the majority of cases) think. Putting names to positions is largely irrelevant in political party setups and in UK politics in general.

At least that's my excuse for not being able to tell you who was Home Secretary. "Some Tory arsehole". It was "Some Labour arsehole" a couple of years ago.

He doesn't come across as particularly stupid. From what I know of him , & granted it is totally from the radio, he seems clever enough.
Certainly compared to some of the characters that broadcast on Radio 1 (& again i have to qualify that i'm not more than a very occasional listener to the station outside of the CMS, & this is a possibly unfair opinion based on the scantiest of evidence) there are a few presenters you wouldn't trust to tie their own shoelaces without their mother present. I don't want name names <cough - Ferne Cotton - cough> .

And you do have to consider that he is co-writer with Chris of the material on the show, & from what we hear , the chief writer given Chris' other commitments.
While you don't need degree in English literature to do that, it would be exceedingly difficult if he were 'stupid'.

An ignorance of current affairs may be a deplorable oversight , but it is not a pointer of intelligence.

But didn't we just go through all this type of thing before on the Ask Aled thread?

Well said Bas. one of the beauties of the world is we are all different and all think differently.

Can you imagine this planet if we ALL thought exactly the same?

Politics, schmolitics - I don't care.

I know very little about politics and the functions of the roles within the UK system (let alone who they are filled by).

With the 'cult of celebrity' I'm aware of a lot of politicians, but the only reason I have heard of Theresa May is through her numerous gaffes. This is because I don't really care for politics and don't tend to concern myself with it.

I don't see significant differences between the main parties when it comes to election time, and I think because of the gross similarities between them - people focus on smaller, less important issues when it comes to choosing who to vote for.

People can tell you that it's your social responsibility to know who is making what decision for you - but in reality it makes very little difference if you're not in a position to influence those decision, and especially if you have no organic passion for politics. There are a lot of people who 'watch the watchmen' but I'm not one of them - and while I'm not 'proud' that I don't take an interest in politics, I'm not particularly ashamed about it.

Just out of interest, are there any others on here who abstain from voting?
