What does Rachel have to do with it?

I meant moyles always used to do impressions of her, and in doing so, create a caricature of her, which from what I can see, is how the loose women present their personalities, a bit ott.

Shouldve clarified.

I sort of see what you mean...not sure if I agree though. I know Loose Women comes in for tons of flak, but I don't mind it. Women over 30 are so rarely given any space on tv to discuss issues that matter to them.

That's why I can't stand Loose Women - it ought to be a platform for women over 30 to talk about the things that matter to them, but in fact it is a programme where a bunch of self absorbed women talk about crap. I suppose that might be what matters to them, but if it is, they are doing no favours to the public conception of grown up women.

As long as you realise that they don't actually represent real people, that's fine! It would be a problem if you allowed these awful harridans to be your idea of what grown up women are actually like.

I've seen them talk about stuff like media representation of women - I don't think they only talk crap. But the format of the show means they only get limited time in which to stay on one subject, and they have to discuss topics that are relevant to the guests they have on, most of that is bound to be crap. I still think the fact that women who are not 22 and a size 2 get any airtime at all is a step forward, though.

I think its tokenism though, which just makes it worse in the long run.

It may have started as that (No facts to back that though. :-) ) but if the figures whent through the floor they'd have no choice but to take it off the air. I have no clue what the viewing figures are like though. I could have talked my way into a complete load of rubbish.

Since when has being utter bilge had anything to do with a programme's viewing figures? Popularity is no measure of quality.

I know how it works.
Good figures: It stays on air
Bad figures: It's gone for good. (Well. for a few years then they bring it back all re-vamped).

If it was based on quality then programmes like 'The only way is Essex' would self combust under it's own weight of manure. Never to be seen or heard of again.

I think what slaphead was saying is that the show may have been initially made purely as a token gesture, but if the viewing figures were terrible they wouldn't have continued to make it for that reason alone, so the fact that it's been popular so long might mean that you can't really regard it as merely tokenism anymore. I don't think I have really clarified that much, but I know what I mean...

This. I cringe every time a presenter of an ethnic minority who is clearly rubbish is parachuted in, because of a lack of representation it can be perceived that all presenters of an ethnic minority are rubbish. I find it much worse when it's general youth coming on TV or radio with stupid views who speak with an 'urban' accent & dialect - which comes across as ignorant and generally horrible which lessens public opinion of everyone with that accent.

Loose women perpetuates a LOT of negative myths about women over 30, in the same way that Sex in the City does. It's poisonous to any cause to be misrepresented in the mainstream media - just ask Muslims, Catholics, Gypsys or anyone from Essex!
