Angus Deayton has been axed as the host of BBC quiz show Have I Got News For You. Programme chiefs said his position was "untenable" after a series of drugs and sex scandals. His dismissal was with immediate effect, despite having filmed just two episodes for the latest series.

Team captain Paul Merton will host the next episode while the search for a new replacement is made, the BBC said.

rumour has it that itv political editor john sergeant will replace Deyton. Anyone who has seen his dry and witty presentation skills during the Spike Millagan tribute night would certainly endorse his abilities to host the show.

Thought the shows were filmed on Thursdays the day before transmission to get the latest news in ? You saying there are 2 already made ?

Topical comedy does not come easy. Many episodes are scripted and rehearsed months in advance to ensure top notch delivery every time. The BBC employs two main writers Lord Burt Masterhorn and Sir Alan C**t whose job it is to predict the major news headlines in any given year. They were particuarly pleased when they foresaw the Death of Princess Diana and wrote an entire episode about it a whole three months before the event, although the 2000 petrol crisis was "just a lucky guess" they laugh.

i have to say i find this 100% * hilarius :) i mean at first when it came out earlier in the year i thought it was stunt to promote the series coming back however the storys ive been reading about him are amazing! but the man who on the show would slate mps for anything like this does it himself is just superb.....John Leslie to present "Have i got"?

Well the betting is

John Seargent favourite - red cheeked fella retiring from ITV, much remembered for Thatcher brushing him away

Stephen Fry - Deadpan posh fop though they can be helped by the fact he wont have an affair.

Anne Robinson - An odd choice but stern, Ian would still try and rile her

Christine Hamilton - Yeah an outsider but what hasnt she done

Andrew Marr - Jug Earred fella. Well thats a plus as its provided Nick Hancock with about 50 jokes about Lineker

(My real outsider bet is Rory Bremner)

he had to go after last weeks episode because even merton an hislop were bored because christine hamilton turned everything back to angus. i think that had more bearing than what he actually did. bring in john seargeant an i think it will be good as ever. stephen fry annoys me.....

I think Stephen Fry should do it. Paul Merton is at his best as a captain.
