ok here goes. I just dont get John Peel, i tried to listen to him but i end up turning over to radio 4 hes that dull. Is the fact that hes 60 and plays unlistenable tunes, is that his angle. The only thing i can praise him for is discovering the Undertones, but then someone wouldve done that eventually.
People says hes an institution, cobblers. People say hes ahead of the times, rubbish. you listen to the stuff he played 5 years ago, sounds like novelty records and dare i mention the two fateful words " Cuban Boys ". And his "credibility and coolness" i just dont get. Fake indie wannabees who think Kid A was fantastic listening to olf grey fart who does voiceover for NTL company. Waiting to be berated...

Don't forget the Insurance company (which went bust) and the washing powder. I agree, his monotones do absolutely nothing for me - ship him off to Radio 2.
I'm listening to Radiohead at the moment, sending me into depression
the_dr

you are not seeing the bigger picture. i used to really be into local bands from the hampshire area, and went to see them every weeekend in aldershot. my favourite band, INTER, were not even signed and completely unheard of when Peel gave them a session. They got signed straight away and are getting bigger and bigger.
There is no way you can say "indie wannabes". The bands he gives a chance to are all struggling and his show is an excellent platform for them. It is also incredible the lengths he goes to in order to dig out the talent. He genuinely likes all the music he plays.
Whether he has a boring voice or not is not really the point of his show (unlike moylesy's show) - he is "an institution" because he has always strived for new, struggling, talent.

He's not the only one promoting unsigned talent - Steve Lamaq and the Sessions in the nations do as well. I'm not saying he shouldn't be broadcasting - I just think he'd be better suited to another Radio station like R2.
the_dr
