His specific words were "That is such a huge undertaking we couldn't come close to achieving that", and I think the main reason is because of the ROT folder situation, which sounds like it could be a right pain to work with. So I think all we can do really is ask for the incomplete shows (which happen to be ROT ones), and then ask for as many CD's as he can possibly manage, with the priority being the early years, in year order i.e. 2004 most important and 2008 being least important, because the quality gradually got better.

That sounds sensible. How many ROT-sourced shows are missing? It's 310MB x 8 (to include handovers) per show = 2.5GB per show. If it's 7x ROT shows, that'd be 17.5GB and I could certainly whisk up a USB drive for that. It'd fit on a couple of my flash drives...
Transfer at normal USB speeds would be around 15 minutes. This needs to be confirmed between Aled and ianp, as if it's that little ROT data, Aled may want to do that "While U Wait". He could even FTP us those files. 17.5GB is not a lot of data.

ianpwilliams wrote:When it comes to picking up CD's and maybe dropping off a hard drive (do you have a spare one Neil?), I'm just hoping that we only have to pick up the CD's before Friday, and not pick them up, rip them, and get them back by Friday! But I'm sure it's the former. I'll ask him that. But if we can get a lot of CD's, then maybe we could ask for a second volunteer (or volunteers) if you want Neil? Unless you would be happy doing it all yourself (assuming there's no time limit for ripping)?

I have plenty of spare time (if not plenty of cash!) right now, so I'd be happy to rip and encode to MP3 (and FLAC) every show, assuming there's no time limit.
If there are hundreds of CDs and Aled is concerned about security/trust (he doesn't know me or most of anyone else here really), he may want to loan us x number of CDs, have us rip them and then return them to collect a new batch.

If Aled really is willing to loan us hundred of CDs, then I may need help in physically transporting the CDs. I've got about 30 of those Steel CD cases here full of discs. Each case holds 60 discs, so I can do some rough and ready reckoning once we determine numbers.

What's the deal with Friday (21st Sep?) deadline? After that, no loanage from Aled?

I'm not sure how many ROT shows are missing, and I'm not sure if Aled would know either. It may be a case of him not finding out until he actually spoke to the guys in archives.

Apparently it's something to do with Aled being off, and Radio 1 moving to it's new home. So I don't know if maybe there would be something available later on after that, but I it's sounds like possibly not. But I'll ask him.

Aled will know. It's the first Radio 1 show Chris hosted. It was on at about the same time as Dev is now. Basically pre-breakfast show, show. Chris called it the early bit.

Ok thanks. I've messaged Aled back. I basically told him what out priority list was, which is:

1 - The afternoon shows (working backwards from the last one). We were thinking that it would be best to work backwards from the last afternoon show, just because that was apparently when it was at its most similar in style to the breakfast show.

2 - Our worst-quality breakfast shows (2004 and January-April 2005). These are apparently the worst-quality ones we have (I think some might even be mono!).

3 - Saturday shows

4 – “The Early Bit”

5 - The seven incomplete breakfast shows that we know of

I've told him that obviously we aren't expecting to get everything on the list, but that at least now we have a starting point. I've also asked what the Friday situation is i.e. how long we have to rip once we've picked up the CD's, and if the Friday is a last ever, never again deadline.

Yes. A generous chap posted me DVD recordings. They are actually the ones going up next, but give it a bit of time as they are ma-hoos-sive and will tie up my interweb connection for days.

That sounds good to me, nice one.

Just a point regarding the incomplete breakfast shows, if we are including missing handovers, then we've probably got tons on "incomplete" shows, purely because the Listen Again streams used to finish at 10.00am prompt, and we all know Chris liked a natter after the show. Also, the errors we had with the breakfast show were with the November and December 2008 shows I sent to Slaphead. Those problems might also exist with the 2009 shows I am due to send him. So we're probably missing more tiny bits and bobs than we thought.

Yeah, I wasn't including 10am handover cutoffs, because there were a huge amount of them unfortunately. The BBC iPlayer people did extend it by 5 minutes for a while, which (usually) covered it. But then they cut it back again, which is when I started taking things into my own hands and started downloaded Fearne Cotton's shows as well.

I don't think it really matters if the odd link here and there is missing. With 1800-odd shows to enjoy (or whatever it is), I don't think we can complain :D

I noticed while loading up my MP3 player that the first ever breakfast show isn't very good quality compared to the subsequent ones - even the second show is significantly better. Anyone else think it's worth asking for a better copy?
