I think Ian does this, but is there anyone out there who records the whole show to listen to in MP3 format after the event?

I only ask, as on days like today when I am re-listening to the bits fo the show I missed earlier, I always seem to get to the funniest bit before I have to leave work, and access to iPlayer. Just wish sometimes I could hit 'download' and continue with an MP3 in the car on way 'ome.

I use Get iPlayer Automater which downloads the shows for me to iTunes and I sync the daily show to my iPod.

I do a lot of walking every single day to keep fit and healthy and have managed to loose 2 and a half stone since January and am nearly where I want to be - anyway, so I download the show and either listen to it through iTunes on my Mac, or when i'm out and about or on a walk i've got the show in my years! :)

Yes, I record the show on Freeview each day, then copy an MP3 over to my PC and listen through that, then archive it on an external HDD.

Yeah, I use Radio Downloader and archive everything on my dear flatmate's 6 terrabyte hard drive. They are handy to catch up with bits I've missed or to put on my mp3 player for weekends or when the team are on hols, as well as sound clipping and Tedious Link transcribing.

I have a fairly complete archive going back to about July 2010.

I used to use Radio Downloader until the Beeb killed the MP3 versions of the show.
Radio Downloader still outputs an MP3, but it has been transcoded from the AAC (Flash) version. This sucks up lots of CPU when transcoding, and also loses a bit of quality.

So, I found a customised (branch) version of get_iplayer that remuxes (twice) the BBC stream in to an .m4a file that can be imported in to iTunes and then on to my iPod.
This is a lossless process, so it gives you a file that is the same quality as the original iPlayer stream. It also doesn't bring my PC to its knees during transcoding because there is no transcoding.

I can post a link to this custom version if there's interest.

Yes please. I have been having all those same problems with Radio downloader and it takes too long to download a show now.

Warning: this is fairly techy-nerd heavy and may not work, as I can't actually remember where I found the branch, but it looks like this patch has made it in to the official builds, so you should be OK. If you aren't a techie, find a techie friend to help.

I'm assuming you're running Windows?

Get the "latest" version of get_iplayer from: http://www.infradead.org/get_iplayer_wi ... latest.exe
It's not really the latest version, it's the latest publicly released version from June 2010. Later we'll get the "bleeding edge" version.

Install it, and find out where it put the files. In my case, it's C:\Program Files\get_iplayer

Then, get the latest snapshot of the get_iplayer archive at: http://git.infradead.org/get_iplayer.git

Currently, this is: http://git.infradead.org/get_iplayer.gi ... 59c.tar.gz

Unpack the snapshot with something like WinRAR. Look inside the unpacked archive and you'll a bunch of files and folders. They need to go in the C:\Program Files\get_iplayer folder (replace all the existing ones).

That (in theory) should update you to the latest version which includes this revision:

2011-04-04
Shevek Output AAC as M4A for iTunes with metadata tags

Now you are ready to run get_iplayer. The web interface is easy peasy, lemon squeezy and I think you can leave most of the defaults as-is.

Start up "Web PVR Manager" and you should be good to go.

I just searched for "Moyles" under radio, then hit "Add Series". Now, I just need to click "Run PVR" in the web interface to pull down the show each time. I think you can have the PVR running in the background all the time as well, but I haven't tried that.

Cheers!

What will also work, in terms of getting a raw aac file from iPlayer, is a program called Replay Media Catcher 4. It is a pay program however, unless you can find it for free somewhere.

I don't think that will work in iTunes or in an iPod though -- what the Beeb actually deliver over iplayer is an AAC file wrapped in an MP4 container which is then wrapped in an FLV(!)

Hence get_iplayer remuxing it twice to extract and correctly tag the AAC. If Replay Media Catcher does it automatically, that'd be clever. Also, it's not free, whereas get_iplayer is.

Yeah you're right in saying that the AAC files that get_iplayer extracts won't work on iTunes/iPod. Load any of them into VLC and the timecode is all over the place.

You end up having to convert it to MP3, which get_iplayer can do but it's far less hassle to just use Radio Downloader for this in my opinion.

EDIT: Ah, you'll have to excuse me, I didn't read far enough up the thread. Are the AAC/m4a files your version outputs fully compatible with iPods?

Yes. You just drag the file in to iTunes and Viola.

You gain three advantages using this version of get_iplayer over Radio Downloader:

1) No loss of quality -- the AAC is not recoded to MP3 (lossy)

2) The remuxing from flv/mp4/AAC to m4a is very quick, even though it takes two passes, because it's just reading and writing the file, not transcoding it. I had Radio Downloader set to output MP3s at high quality and it took forever.

3) The remuxing doesn't use any CPU -- Radio Downloader used lots to do the transcoding.

Another advantage of get_iplayer was that it embedded the artwork from the show (e.g. photos of guests). It doesn't seem to do that on my version, but might do in the newer builds I linked to. I may try a newer build myself at some point.

I hadn't noticed any loss of quality with radio downloader actually. I don't use iTunes - I hate that program with a passion - so I'd find an m4a file a faff to convert, and all my transcoding is done on our external server rather than my PC, so I don't have an issue with CPU. I think for someone who's just looking to listen to the show in their car or something like Tim, radio downloader is still a pretty easy solution.

What I always find funny is how I'm usually the only girl taking part in these discussions. I never thought of myself as a geek, but I think between living with Dan and learning how to archive/upload/soundclip for the purposes of contributing here, I've kind of become one. Which is cool :)

Right. I've downloaded and set it all up but it only gives me .m3u files which are pretty pointless. How do I get the m4a or AAC files?

That makes no sense. Uninstall everything, get the official release of get_iplayer working first, then try the bleeding edge version.

Or find a local friendly techie/nerd person to help out.

That's what I did. I followed your post and downloaded the program and installed it. And then unzipped that .rar file and replaced it with the files in C:\Program Files and selected the recorded files to go into C:\Program Files and nothing is in there and when I click on 'recordings' on the web manager it just downloads a playable .m3u file to my PC and in C:\Users\Ben\get_iplayer\pvr I have a few 1kb files which don't do anything

Cool bananas! I'm glad it was relatively painless, as it means other peeps should be able to do it as well.

Cheers ears,

Yeah it actually was quite easy. I feel like a fool for not renaming that file now. Just another quickie. Any idea if it is possible to download TV shows using it?

Oh, yes. Play around with the web interface. It's not terribly easy to use, but it's all there if you poke around.
