How does one get one's profile hacked? Surely they'd need your password? And what did they do to it?

I don't know how people hack profiles cos I never hacked anything, but it's happened to tons of people I know on myspace and other sites. Yes they need your password, but there are ways of getting it, like phishing (for any geeks out there, I'm aware that I'm well out of my depth trying to explain this). I dunno what they did, but when I came to log in my profile had been disabled, and facebook don't tell you why, they just suggest that you've been spamming or uploading offensive content. So I guess that's what they did. Everything I'd posted under my old login has disappeared, so I have no idea what might have been done under that login to prompt it being disabled.
