Out of those that were on the short list, Cav was the deserved winner. However there were a few glaring omissions in the short list, due to the way it was compiled I imagine.

Happy for Cav though, he's not only a great sportsman, he actually has a personality too - which many of them really don't.

I thought Cavendish or Cook would get it.

It was always going to be Mark Cavendish, but given what he's achieved this year it seems appropriate. First Brit to win the green jersey at the Tour de France and also World Road Race Champion. Had to be him.

The cricket team deserved the team of the year award too.

I boycotted the Awards this year. Absolute bullshit.

Why? They didn't nominate ONE female sportsperson. Not one. I can think of a fair few who deserved to get nominated above some of the male nominees, Jessica Ennis and Rebecca Adlington for a start. Couldn't believe some of the nominees, Amir Khan got nominated? Seriously? He killed a guy with his car for christ's sake!

Apparently some reacted to the criticism (the Daily Fail being one of them) by saying 'if women want a sports personality of the year award, why don't they have their own awards show'. Well I always though the Personality of the Year Awards were not gender restricted, but I guess I was wrong judging by this year's awards!

I agree with you, although I don't think the gender issue is relevant. Certain people who should have been on the list weren't - some of them were women, some were men.

The way the shortlist was compiled was a joke - it needs to be done by a group of people who represent a broad cross section of sports related fields, who will do it methodically and rationally, looking at achievement and nothing else. Asking newspapers to pick their favourites is just silly. If the BBC don't sort that out next year there could be a big backlash against the awards.

They won't sort it out though. Not UNTIL there's a backlash at least.

I agree the cricket team deserved team of the year, Red Bull have to be runner up to them though, if they do a runner up for team (I don't think they do thinking about it.)

It's the night of Christmas Eve / Early hours of Christmas morning. You have something niggling away at you. It's like an itch you can't scratch. It's like a nipple you cannae tickle. It's like raiinn on your wedding day. What do you do to get relief from this gnawing sensation? Pop on here at 2:34am and even use caps to highlight your point.

* SAKE TOPH! It was 2:30AM. If I'm on the PC at time of night, I ain't posting about Sports Personality of the year.

I'm playing Mahjong.

Whilst wanking.

That's no excuse. See above for more meaningful ways in which to occupy yourself at that time of the night.
