It doesn't remind me of any abacus I've ever seen, although it's fair to say that I haven't seen them all. It does involve counting of a sort though.

It is quite obviously is a pattern in Conway's Game of Life that travels across the board. It was first discovered by Richard K. Guy. It is the smallest spaceship, and it travels diagonally at a speed of c/4. It is often produced from randomly-generated starting configurations.

I thought everyone knew that.

Wey! I was half right! It kind of looked like a sideways abacus!! I knew there was counting in it, because you like figures.

In my opinion there are 3 types of geek:

1. Has 'funny' stories about maths, pc's and kind of laughs with a nasal snort. Wears beige chino type trousers, with a 'comedy' t shirt tucked in. The ensemble is teamed with Hi-Tec trainers. Greasy hair, bad skin and 0% chance of getting a shag EVER. (My cousin)

2. I present Jon Tickle as an example. Very nerdy with a dodgy laugh, but very likeable, and really an endearing geek. Good chance of a leg over with a 'geeky' girl.

3. Closet geek. I'd place myself in this category. Appears normal, acts normal most of the time, regular type of person. Finds some things way too interesting, but tries hard to not let it show. Kind of technical curiosity rather than full on geek :)

I'm in the number 3 category too, ladb., I think. However, John Tickle!! vomits. No chance of a "leg over". More chance of a broken leg.

I think it's both customary and polite to state who you are quoting when doing so.

It's just it didn't come across as subtle. It seemed as subtle as a factory crashing down to Earth.

Oh, you're right enough. I thought you were being told off, and I was getting all excited.

What exactly would that "geek off" entail? I'd like to see if Viv's 3 top geeks are well placed. For instance, I wouldn't have classified Foots as a geek at all. Additionally, Console doesn't strike me as the greasy haired, pocket protector geek stereotype, either. Nor does Bruvva. Perhaps I need to look at Lad's descriptions again?

I wouldn't class myself as a geek either. Well, I would, but it would be a category 3 geek according to Ladbrokes 'Scale of Geekiness'.

I think I could put Console and Topher in there as well although Console is a bit of a dark horse in that one. GBM would fit in there as well, if he ever shows up and reads this. Zoot and Bonanananana Zoid, im not so sure about - they are right into that WoW thingy... That has 'geekiness' written all over it!

I don't think Andy B would be able to hack it as a geek. I'm not sure geeks have dreams about ruling the world.

'Ergo'... S4B is the biggest geek on the board. Easy.

Apparently, according to Lad's description, anyone with a considerable interest (overt or not) in something (technical or not?) would qualify under the Class 3 Geek Classification. So that's me...and you, S4.

Once again, I feel the need to point out the difference between geeks and WoW players; perhaps the term 'nerd' is a better fit for those people.

Hang On... I just got called a 'nerd' by the Lord Console? Pot, Kettle, very dark shade of Grey...

I'm not worried, for it has always been said the Geek will inherit the Earth.

I totally agree with the whole 'large difference' thing, I disagree with your argument that playing WoW puts me into the 'Nerd' Category when I was all comfy and secure here with the geeks.

Anyway, I'm not going to argue my social status, i'll start to sound like S4B.
