You see I have no issue with that type of rationalisation of Valentines Day at all, it's lovely. I just dislike how it's got completely out of hand, with massive expectations. It's just become an incredibly expensive emotional minefield, with people investing it with far more significance and importance than it ever should have.

And if it weren't for the fact that it would probably end up in someones sig, I would probably say at this point that I would like to be AndyJ's girlfriend.

I agree Yud, the commerical side of it is crazy, people make it more than it really is, but thats the same with all 'events' these days, thats how it is i guess...

my g/f never expect anything, she would be happy with a cosey night in with a DVD and a glass of wine, I choose to spoil her and spend money on her... I got tickets to see westlife *groan* at the O2 in march, VIP tickets in a Box there, she doesnt know I have them yet... I just like suprising her with stuff....

Im blushing Yud! ha ha

I planned (half an hour ago) to take the missus to Windsor Safari Park - but it closed in 1992!

Valentines day is yet one more of these unnecessary expenses. **vomits** I think it's better to randomly make someone happy, rather than specify an actual day for it!! Besides, I don't associate the day with positive events. I remember once giving a card to someone years ago, written in code, he was walking down a flight of stairs trying to decifer the code, looking back at me, and he fell down a flight to stairs, and had to go to A&E with a suspected broken ankle. Two days later though, he asked me out. Result or what.

Ha ha. Thought someone would say that.

I'll make it more specific, those that HAVE partners etc, how much have you spent, or will be spending?

Valentine's Day is not an American holiday, it has been around for hundreds of years, and can be connected to other 'love' days in other cultures, most notably, one from Greek Mythology which falls somewhere else in February.

It is far from an American holiday, and the fact that it, along with numerous other holidays throughout the year, have been used as a source of revenue by greeting card companies (and not just American ones, although the most famous ones are), and the gift industry in general, doesn't make it an American holiday. The day is just a day used to emphasise and celebrate love, and I, for one, can see nothing wrong with that.

You obviously missed my point further up in the thread. My point is, why do people need one day in the middle of february, surely if they love their partner enough, they would do it throughout the whole year?

That'd be for the same reason that we need a single day to celebrate Christmas, or a single day to celebrate you mother or father - people need an excuse to celebrate something. Sure, they can do it all year round, but on those 'special' days they make an extra effort and do something extra special.

I'm not sure how that point relates to 'American crap', though.
