Yudster wrote:Well its true - what is the point in investing in loads of snow clearing gear and special stuff for busses and whatever when we will only use them once or twice a decade? This is the south of England, significant snow is unusual here - its perfectly acceptable to be thrown by an unusual situation!

If you have a lot of snow I can totally see the problem and I agree about the council tax issue. However........... We have very little snow here and yet the schools announced they would be closed before 8am! What is that all about? I'm not saying that where roads are completely blocked and visibility is poor and you have an extreme situation that we should be able to cope, I am referring to the fact that with even half an inch of snow today they shut my kids' schools! It is just crazy. Can you not see that?

The SU at uni has organised a snowball fight later, which should be good fun, as we have lots of snow.

Quite a bit of snow here in Oxford, and very icy roads/pavements. Lectures are still on - we were all waddling up the hill like penguins this morning to get to them.

It's not! It's due to the snow! Had an email from the headmaster,

I know, last time it was like that in East London was in 1991 (I was only 7)

Unfortunately by the time I got home the little sh*tes had already pinched most of it although they are helping people out, they've completely cleaned off three cars so they're doing some sort of service I suppose

I don't understand this. People at our place have been asking all day about going home early and have been told (quite rightly) that the situation will be reviewed regularly, but unless they live over 30 miles away, they shouldn't have a problem getting home too late.

I've seen it worse than this, about five or six years ago when it was literally a freak snow storm... started at some point during the day and by the time people were starting to go home, it had settled in a big way. Took mum's other half over four hours to get home from Bedford, there were queues everywhere. I went to the pub till they died down.

It's been snowing here solid for about 3 hours now, pretty heavy, I'd say we have about 2 inches covering. We've been forecasted the same for the rest of the night too.

I don't drive to work, I have to rely on public transport. London Buses were completely suspended this morning & by 1pm only a few were running. All but the Victoria Line on the tube either were either suspended (Circle line still is), part suspended or have major delays. British Rail is in a big state as well, GER (National Express East Anglia these days) was running fine until 8am, then cut back to every half hour on the metro services, then at mid-day every 60 minutes & at the mo it seems every 75 minutes.

Problem is where I live is on the East London/South West Essex border, literally. Where I work is up right near Epping Forest, there's no direct connection between the Central Line & NatEx East Anglia except at Stratford. By 12pm Woodford to Hainault had been suspended with severe delays on the rest of the line, although the Epping branch was still running whenever the Woodford to Hainault shuttle gets shut there's a huge knock on effect. Because also due to a lack of buses I couldn't get off at Leytonstone to get a bus back to Ilford & would have to have gone all the way into Stratford.

The conditions down here are abysmal & all the London Boroughs & Essex County Councils really haven't prepared for this, that's why they've let everyone go home early.

Why the * is the underground suspended due to snow?! Major delays I could understand as people make alternative arrangements, but suspended?!

Quite a lot of the underground lines actually travel overground at certain points, usually on the outskirts of London I believe.

Only about 40% of it is actually underground, the rest is above ground.

You need to move to Canada or Scotland then. ;)

Funny thing is that in Scotland they have snow fairly often & still function no problem, however one day of snow in London, Essex & Kent and it all goes tits up

Tomorrow is going to be the dangerous day, the new layer of fresh snow on top of the old, now icy snow.

Why is that funny? The reason you manage in Scotland is precisely becasue you do get snow often. We don't - maybe once every few years or so, if that. So what would be the point in local authorities in the south of England spending a fortune buying all the stuff they need to cope with significant snow, when it would only get used once or twice a decade? Of course it all goes tits up when we get snow, its not normal for it to snow here!

The first year I lives in London was the last time I saw any significant snow in central London. We had about an inch and that was 5 years ago! That's why it's so bad because relatively there is so much of the stuff.

Actually I'm from (and live) in East London, not Scotland

But what you say is correct, one bloke on BBC London News said that it was atrocious and was like living in "a third world country" what rot. Plus also when BBC London News asked Beano Boris why he didn't invest money in a plough he said there was not point because it could be two decades since it was ever used again

Thing is, they've been threatening this since last Tuesday so the London Borough's, etc. had some time to prepare at least, the main High Road's in LB Redbridge were completely covered in snow this morning & in the afternoon & evening nothing much as changed.
