RM did say they had massive success with their All-In-Ones at school. I hope they will be replaced by the Stone Tower and Xerox/Prolite Ilyama monitors comobs, they're so much faster!

There is also a 'laptop trolley', that can be booked by any teacher for any class, they are Samsung R519s, Intel Pentium, 3GB RAM, 2GHz
http://tinyurl.com/sams-r519

Staff have various Toshiba laptops.

This is how the system works

--- Windows Server 2003-- (connects to)
--- RM CC4-- (connects to)
--- Windows XP Pro -- (connects to)
--- Computer

I wouldn't be surprised if your schools have CC4, when you logon, you see a screen like the attached

Nope, we're CC3. I've been pushing to go to CC4 but we needed to upgrade our servers and the funds didn't stretch to getting CC4 on top. So it won't be happening for the forseeable.

Our school upgraded to CC4 over the summer, from a student's point of view, I just like the new desingn. There's obviously some major advantages over CC3 that the ICT Technicians felt that it was worth upgrading. Oh, speaking of servers, students are on Server 3(N), and this is how the disk quotas went:

Sept 10 - 700 GB (yes, 700GB)
Oct 10 - 700 MB
Dec 10 - 150 MB
Feb 10 - 100 MB

100MB is NOT enough!!!

I assume the 700GB was a mistake. Our students only get 50, which is just about enough as long as they're not doing loads of movie maker or anything like that. We've got the space now to go up to 100 probably, we might do it next year.

The major advantage of CC4 from my point of view is that you can connect Vista and 7 stations to it which CC3 doesn't support. Microsoft ends XP support in 2014 so we need to be in a place where we can start phasing XP out fairly soon, so obviously with CC3 we're not. There are some other advantages too, deployment of applications is easier and more efficient and the management console has extra functionality.

Unfortunately our budget has been slashed by about 80% so now we can only spend money on things we really need (i.e. replacing stuff when it blows up). It annoys me actually the way the finance system works in schools, as each department gets their own pot to spend on what they percieve to be the most important. Our English department has just spent over a grand on an interactive whiteboard for a teacher who doesn't want or need it, but the department head thinks she should have one so that's where the money was spent. We could have spent that money on 5 new PCs for our Library where the computers are in dire need of replacing, but we're not allowed to do that.

Anyway, I'm digressing now. If you're reading Mr Cameron, sort it out!!

When you logon, on the right, it displays the information about the computer, e.g. location, disk quota, printer credits ect.

Also, at the bottom of each document it says the exact location of the document, incase the technicians need to check it,.

Last year, on CC3, we had 50 printer credits. (Each time you print a page, that counts as 1 credit) Now it's unlimited. the ICT Technicians are going to regret that.

Your point about installing an IAWB for a teacher that doesn't want or need it, is true in my school. This Geography teacher who is in his 60s had one installed, and you have to ask...WHY?!!

So will the Finance Manager. We've took all the printers out as it's costing the school an absolute fortune.

At our school, the main brand of printers we use is 'Kyocera'. In computer rooms (9 of them), there is this:

Kyocera FS-3920DN (15000 page toner, toner at around £70 (TK-350)
http://tinyurl.com/kyo-3920

The 3920 replaced the FS-3820, which had a 20000 page toner (TK-65, £75)
http://tinyurl.com/kyo-3820

In the library, there is a Kyocera FS-1350DN, and an HP Color LaserJet CP2020. Colour printing is 30p a page.

Seems like a really good one. Should be good with an intel i3 processor and 4GB RAM

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 530, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.53GHz, 3GB RAM, 455GB HDD. Still works really well!

Do you really need 8GB RAM/Intel i7 processor? You could save yourself hundreds of hundreds of pounds by opting for one with an Intel Pentium processor, which are quite good.

Future Proofing.... When i bought my last laptop, at the time it was all singing, all dancing. 4.5 years on it is still considered 'good' and better than a lot of budget laptops available now. So, using the same logic by buying a 8GB i7, it should still rock da house for a few years to come. Why buy a £500 laptop now that needs upgrading/replacing in 18 months to keep it up to date?

Plus, I use it for architectural drafting, so it has to run certain programmes with speed and be able to manage large drawing files.

Okay, fair enough:) If you're going to be working with large files, then you obviously need a decent one!

Yeah, sorry, I did think after posting that comment that I had sounded a little harsh on the capabilities of a £500 laptop. I know full well a £500 laptop is more than enough for most, but unfortunately due to the nature of my job, I require one with a little more beef. If it was just iPlayer and pron I needed it for then that'd be fine.
