Chikin: PHP is an open source product aimed to promote creativity and openess within the programming community. Just go to SourceForge and HotScripts and you will see hundreds, if not thousands of scripts available to use for free. With those scripts, I can do what I want - run them, change them, use them on my site, pass them on to my friends. By doing that, we are improving the scripts regardless of commercial gains. You don't have to look far to see how successful the open source ethos has been:
Linux
PHP
Apache
Gnutella
Even the HTTP protocol itself is entirely open and free. These are all incredibly successful products - Apache is the #1 server in the world, PHP is the fastest growing web programming language an Gnutella has started the whole P2P barrage rolling. I have been heavily involved with Gnutella and have feature in the Sunday Telegraph and Radio Times, and will appear on BBC in August. So, no, I don't know **** all about the internet. Read it for yourself:
http://www.thedr.freeserve.co.uk/starticle.txt http://www.thedr.freeserve.co.uk/edited.jpg
All this because of open source programming, something which you obviously disagree with.
Progress is being made - our futures are being mapped, and you either become part of it, or you stick to your 'professional software design' and all the 'commercial implications' that come with it.
I am aware of your worries about security and suchlike, but why should we let that - and the small matter of money - stifle progress?
the_dr

How can you send a virus through a web site? Theres pleanty of bugs in web browsers - but I just went there with no problems.
But there are a lot of viruses around at the moment-
Sircam (I think thats how you spell it)
Code Red
I have had about 15 copies of Sircam emailed to me over the past week. It's an email saying 'Hi, How are you? Check this file out' or something similar. The file is infact a random file from the senders My Documents folder. That is then infected with the virus. This is a serious virus, so much so that it was even on Newsbeat this evening.
the_dr

Have u ever considered the fact that sometimes you don't get what you want. It's an important lesson in life. btw. if you were all knowing about computers why don't u like creating things for yourself instead of relabelling other peoples work?
Open source is good, but I don't accept anything that some one endavours to force on me.
You foooked up. Face it .. spoilt boy.
[This message has been edited by chikkintikka (edited 24 July 2001).]

I'm not trying to force anything upon you. It would have been nice if you would have shared the source with me, I asked politely a few times but you said no. Fair enough. I don't relabel other peoples work, it's called working together as a community to create something decent. Working TOGETHER.
Maybe you should try it some time. And I am anything but spoilt.
the_dr
