What makes you say that? Where have i ever said i have anything against black people? As i say the dictionary says the word means a black person, so why can't i use it for this? I admit using the word in an offensive way is wrong, so is a black person calling a white a white *.

Don't sweat McQueen, someone had to get called a racist sooner or later and it was either going to be you or me. Tough luck... Get ready to be hunted, witch!!

well this might be radical but id say this site is 100% white. Im thinking this cos Chris = Leeds and its Northern. Northerners stereotypical are more vociferous in their opinions of ethnic minorities. Oldham, Barnsley...

I don't think he should have had to resign for it. It definately shouldn't have been broadcast and he should apologise for it but he didn't say anyone was being punished for sins in a previous life like Hoddle did, which i do think is a sackable offence. It does seem like it has been blown out of proportion though, especially as he apologised.

Yup, half Scottish half Jamacian. Am I right in thinking that I'm the only non-white preson on the board? If so then I'm pretty out-numbered and this argument is going to be a bit one sided.

I'd imagine the dictionary also has something like 'taboo.' next to it, which means it's not considered polite in normal conversation.

Just thought I'd quote that to emphasise it.

I'm with mcqueen here. i woulddn't use the word myself but hearing it doesnt seem that offensive to me.

it's like on those comedy jam videos, i've never got why theyre funny...

random black comedian "...an' I was like HEY NIGGA"
cue the audience the errupt with laughter.

and those are the bits clipped for the trailers as if theyre funny?!?!?
it seems ok for black people to use the term nigga but white people can't.

to me it's like someone using the term fag for a gay person - i wouldn't find it offensive at all but its used as a slang term.

Refer to my above comment about Moyles calling people fat.

Yes and a W*nker is just a person who w*nks.

He shouldn't have said it but its stupid that he felt he had to resign and people should get over it.

as my sisters boyfriend said "I would be more offended if he wasn't a f*ckin umpa lumpa himself"

How am I supposed to find out if it's in Bridgie's house?

The reason I ask, is because if it was published in the 50's, people had different attitudes back then...

Well it must have been a shite dictionary then. Most of them inform you when a word is liable to cause offence...

I think that is wrong aswell. I don't see why only fat people can describe someone as fat for the fat people not be offended. If they are fat it's a fact, it doesn't matter who describes them as fat. Especially if a group of fat people can all descibe each other as fat but are offended if a slim person descibes them as fat.

I still think the word can be used for describing a black person in a non offensive way.

I see all of your points but you can't really use logic for stuff like this, it has hundreds of years of history. It offends people - everyone knows it - you can't say it.

In 20 years time things may be different.

Asking why a word is offensive is a bit silly. its like asking why s-hit is a bad word. why are people offended by some words and not others? social norms dictate whether ot not a word is taken offensivly or not and as social norms are dictated by years and years of history, they tend yto stick around.

Yup, me too. Last time I got called a n****r by someone they got a hard punch in the face from me that resulted in a broken nose and and a bit of a seeing to from some mates. I don't think you can really understand how hurtful that word is if you're white.
