That is the main thing that I find quite astonishing.
As you say, everything else, including how he runs his site and chooses to fund it is down to him and him alone. Personally, I think if it was a site I got a lot of use from and he asked for 'donations' (nothing in return), I wouldn't have a problem, but seeing is he is trying to coax people into it by offering 'extras' that have no real value, out of principle I wouldn't.
But apparently, so Catherine tells me, I'm not intelligent enough to argue with them anyway, so that's the end of that one.
