Freddie Mercury.

I think that picture of Ms Goulding is one of the unflattering ones. I can't really comment on her singing as most modern singers sound like they're 'adjusted' to me.

Yep, and perhaps the most unique voice as well, never heard an impersonator come anywhere close to his voice either unlike several artists who have had people make a living being (very good) impersonators of them (Elvis springs to mind)

Like Karen Carpenter, nobody sounds like her.

There have been Freddie wannabes though.. Justin whatsisface from The Darkness springs to mind.

Also, don't knock Elvis.

He wished he sounded like Freddie

Oh no don't get me wrong I wasn't knocking Elvis, however there have been one or two who can get him to a T, however with Freddie & Karen Carpenter there hasn't been a tribute act who sounds much like them at all.

Its probably cause I'm too young but honestly I've never really got the appeal of Elvis. Or The beatles actually. I recognise that they have some good songs but i honestly don't see why they were as big as they were and why we are still supposed to think that both of them are the best music acts ever to live.

You've got to think about the times they were of.

No one had made music like they did, no one had connected with the younger generation, they were groundbreaking and original.

Imagine watching a flickery 5inch black and white TV and in the blink of an eye it being replaced by a 50inch surround sound cinema set-up.

That was the impact they had and part of the reason they're so revered. That and the fact that their music is still really rather good.

Exactly. If you listen to the music that went immediately before - stuff like Bill Haley - it sounds tame and unexciting by comparison. The Beatles had an energy and youthfulness, not to mention good looks, that were completely new at the time. My aunt told me that her mum said the Beatles were scruffy and uncouth because of the moptop haircuts - and they wore suits all the time at that point! Everyone loves music that their parents are offended by :)

Mine were especially keen on Appetite For Destruction..."you think you're so cool, why don't you just, F@!* OFF!" Not to mention all the explicit sexual references (bearing in mind I was 13 at the time).

Actually going back to the Beatles, I'm getting 'All You Need Is Love' tattooed on my arm to mark my parents' ruby wedding anniversary in a couple months, with the LO in Love made to look like 40. I'm very excited about it.

Can you actually fit any more tattoos on your body?

I should have mentioned before - although mostly I don't like what she does musically, Lady Ga Ga has a phenomenal voice when she cares to use it.

Now in my opinion, whilst I think Ellie Goulding is OK but nothing hugely special I actually think Lady Ga Ga is very over-rated, Radio 1 play her to death, then again thanks to Radio 1 I absolutely hate "You've Got The Love" now because they won't stop playing that shit Flo & her Machine version of it (I was a big fan of the 1996 remix of the original, unfortunately I now hate all versions of it).

I agree that she is over rated in terms of what she is producing, its derivative, stylized to the point of being painful and all about the presentation - but people like that, and if so, why not? I don't so I don't buy her stuff. My point was though that underneath all that crap she has, as she occasionally demonstrates, an absolutely brilliant voice. She doesn't need it for the most part though, not with the stuff she does.

You need to rise above.

I preferred the Jamie Principle instrumental version, but Candy Station (as my mate calls her) did a damn fine job. Florence's version doesn't register.

Florence's version is hard to listen to. She's a strange one - I think she is an incredible singer, but I just don't like the sound she makes. For all her range and control she is just a bit shouty for me. I'd love to look like her though.

I think part - if not most - of Lady Gaga's success is down to her weirdness.... well, not even her weirdness, the weirdness of the character called Lady Gaga that she's created. That is the part about her that's better than anything else - the marketing of Lady Gaga the brand, the eccentric - to say the least - fictional character. I think, anyway.

I think It's a weird one, she clearly caters to a certain market - a market I don't really identify with - but a market that think she's not only amazing, but that she's furthering their causes and representing them in a better way than anyone who's gone before her.

Which has to be a good thing.

The weird part, for me, is that it seems to be only her market who are aware of it.

Which makes me think that it's more cynical than ideological.
