Making any copy in any form, wheter or not you own the original or not, doesnt make a difference. When you buy the record you buy a copy of it, you don't own the copyright to it.

But as I said, as far as making a copy for the car is concerned, no one cares. The record companies have bigger fish to fry.

You quite possibly know better than me, but I'm fairly certain you're allowed to copy any music that you already own for backup perposes. It's certainly true with VCRs and software, don't see why CDs should be any different.

kind of on a similar theme, I wanted to watch my Phoenix Nights DVD on my computer last night (it's an iMac OSX) on the Apple DVD Player. The DVD worked fine in both a DVD Player and PS2, but when I tried to load it into my computer it wouldn't load the disc and just ejected it. I was only going to watch it on computer because the dvd player and PS2 were being used, and when I tried to load some other DVDs onto computer it accepted them.

just because the dvd is copyrighted it won't load. I didn't want to copy it, just to watch it - it just pissed me off a bit that I couldn't do this and I agree that some kind of situation where upon computers can stop cds/dvds being copied while still allowing them to be played/watched would be ideal.

any technically minded person out there know whether this could be possible in the future?

that only works for that type of "protection", which is a lame form if you ask me. didn't somebody publish a paper about evading that a while ago?
