In hindsight, the link is in the wrong thread. It probably deserved its own thread, or at the very least, to be in the annoying thread.
I have no desire to upset anyone, but the biggest problem I have with organised religion is that I am apparently going to burn in hell for not believing in a god, even though I am (in my opinion) not a bad person. No matter how much I've helped old people across the road, helped my sister out when she needed it or given to charitable causes, I am still going to burn for all eternity. Is that the work of a loving god? To me that is the work of a hateful god. Why does it harm god if I don't believe in him? The only way that non-believers could possibly harm 'him' is if 'he' doesn't exist - if the only way for him to exist is in people's minds, then non-believers can be quite detrimental to the whole faith thing. As far as I can tell, fear is the only reason to believe and frankly I refuse to believe in god on the off-chance that he may exist - which is not true belief anyway. What kind of god gives people freewill and then punishes them for using it?
Of course the other thing is that there are several different interpretations of the 'sacred' scriptures from each one, it's so totally ambiguous. Each one claims to be the definitive answer. Well, what if the Hindus are right? Or the Muslims? Or the Sikhs? If either of those cases are true, does that mean that Christians are going to burn in that correct religion's version hell? The thing is that my non-belief in the Christian god is no different to Christians' non-belief in Ganesh, Zeus or Norse. Religion is nothing better than dangerous nonsense.
I'm absolutely atheistic towards any organised religion, but as regards deism I suppose I'm more agnostic - I'm still not inclined to blindly believe though.
I would like to point out that I have no desire to offend anyone with this post, but the link I posted above, as foot-loose says, highlights some of the worst things about organised religion. This is what makes it particularly dangerous. I have no problem with people who just believe in god and that Jesus was the son of god or the human incarnation of god - you should believe what you feel is right to you - on the condition that that belief does no harm to others.

You are a disgrace and I'm looking forward to when someone you respect dies so I can rub your liberal face in it.
