charlalottie wrote:I'm sad about that. With what Toph said, surely that can apply to people too that the only ones that should be upset are the people directly related to them?

It can do... but there is a slight difference in that with celebrities, some people are fans of that celebrity and will obviously be sad to an extent (not as much a friend or relative would be though) - with (as Yudwuk puts it) someone else's dog, I can't see that anyone would be sad or upset apart from the owner or someone who knew the animal well.

It's a dog that featured on all his shows. I don't watch, but isn't it the case that his animals are an integral part of it?

Its still just a dog. I love animals and I have my pets which I really love (I was dreadfully upset when I lost Tom The Orange Cat last year and I still miss him), but they're still just animals. Comparing the grief when they die to the grief when a loved person dies is a bit - well I was going to say obscene, but no doubt people will object to that. I can't think of another world though.

I know what you mean, it's...disproportionate. But I've only seen the Paul O'G show about ten times in my life and even I kinda went "aww, poor Buster" when I heard. I guess when you see someone on tv all the time you can develop a feeling of some sort of closeness to them (even if it's not a genuine closeness), and it's possible to feel something similar for an animal.

But the way people are talking on here you'd think the dog's death was getting as much coverage as a famour person's death, and I'm pretty sure it's not. :?

Or are we debating whether it warrants a mention on this thread?

Altho thankfully nobody well-known has died today that I'm aware of, it's the 5th anniversary of Dimebag Darrell's passing - something that was deeply felt in the metal community. So I'd like to give an "oh no" for that. (It's also the anniversary of the murder of John Lennon.)

Dimebag was the lead guitarist for a heavy metal band called Pantera. He was killed when a man invaded the stage while he was playing and shot him dead, just like that.

I was never a huge pantera fan but he was an amazingly technically advanced guitarist. Pantera where quite a 'shreddy' band but he always had a melodic feel to his playing and it wasn't all flashy twiddley stuff.
I'm not sure but I think he came up with a new 'riff technique' which involved pinched harmonics and 'dive bombing' the tremelo.

Sorry, I sort of forget that people wouldn't know who he is, I should have clarified. Pantera were such an important band to us metal fans and his murder really brought people together in shock, particularly communities on the internet. My flatmate and I are blasting out Pantera this evening. \m/ :)

It's worth adding that the murderer, Nathan Gale, also killed three other people, including the band's head of security and an audience member who tried to perform CPR on Dime. Gale was then shot dead by an attending police officer, who received an official commendation. Gale was found to still have 35 rounds of ammunition remaining. I know this is about people I've never met and was thousands of miles away from, but just revisiting the details makes me well up - so sad.

Apparently he was mentally disturbed. There are many stories about why he did it ranging from him believing that Pantera were stealing his thoughts to him saying they'd stolen songs he'd written.
