Radio 1 censored for early-evening swearing
Steve Busfield
Monday September 26, 2005

Radio 1 has been rapped by Ofcom over an early-evening tirade of bad language.

"If, like me, you are offended by such words and phrases as: arse, bollocks, tit, wank, tit-wank, rotter, mother licker, mother sucker, mother f ucker, twat, minge juice, bottler and, of course, bastard - then you might wish to turn over, or f uck off," began the voice of an elderly woman on Zane Lowe's BBC show at 7pm on June 16.

The programme, Most Punk, was an examination of punk culture and was preceded by a warning about the strong language.

However, Ofcom ruled: "Given the potential child audience for Radio 1 at this time, we believe that the use of such strong language, with such intensity, at the start of the programme was inappropriate."

Ofcom commended the corporation's attempted signposting of the show's content.

It added: "However, the right to deal with such subject matter comes with the responsibility of ensuring material is appropriately scheduled with the potential child audience in mind.

"While this was a legitimate approach, its application here was seriously misguided."

f*cking brilliant.

I dont get it. Why complain? Scott Mills never shut up about the damn thing all through his show before, they had enough warning.

It’s complete madness especially when you think of all the double-entendre said on the Chris Moyles show.

Pussy & Dick to name but a couple, are more recent ones that spring to mind.

Oooooh Matron

I have children, and have to say I agree with the Censorship.

I love the watershed, kids should NOT be up after 9pm, but at 7pm???

& Flame, the double-entendres are just that, everyday words said in a 'smutty' contex, words like "* & Bollox" are just bad language that kids shouldnt be privvy to.

(Im off my soap-box now!!)

I drive a school bus for a private school, and I must admit, sometimes I wince slightly at things that are said .... the double-entendres are easy to explain away (should I need too), but they're not always double-entendres, sometimes they are a little over the line.

I don't have a problem, but the parents might, especially of the 7 year olds, and the thought of having a choice between boring local radio :( or nothing would really p*ss me off.

Last year one of the parents did complain about "swearing on the radio", and I had to go to a meeting, there was talk about banning 'certain' radio stations, but on further investigation the driver had allowed one of the kids to put an Eminem CD on!

I remember hearing this driving home from Alton Towers. I was mildly shocked they'd use such strong language at such an early time. Not surprised they had complaints about it, imagine if you'd have tuned in right in the middle of it.

alton towers? i've always wanted to go there...

7pm is a bit early. we don't have "safe harbour" here till 10pm, but some stations don't care and will pay the fine anyways. my station has a strict no obscenity/indecency/profanity at all rule, which is annoying but at least we won't get in trouble with the fcc.

parents should be the watchdogs for their kids, not the government.

it's funny that it's only two people. in america, such complaints are far more organized and it's usually like 1000 people from the same fundamentalist group complaining (as in nipplegate). this is what most broadcasters are afraid of here.
