You know there's some theory that dreams have hidden meaning?

I had the greatest/weirdest dream last night, allow me to elaborate.

So i was in a meeting at work, where i was presenting a piece of work. I was introduced to the new marketing manager. He started pulling my efforts to pieces and being insulting to me. we ended up in a fight.

Not so weird? Lets look at the details...
-In this dream, i was working for a choclate company
-The new marketing manager was Freddie from Rod Jane and Freddie fame
-He was in a wheel Chair...
-...and he was chinese
-...and he was a cyclops...
-at the beginning of the meeting it was traditional that we sang the company anthem. It was 'You're Beautiful' by James Blunt (I think it was playing on the radio as i slept)
-At the end i lept on top of him and started pulling his hair. He was about 2 foot bigger than me and chucked me across the room.

What the hell does that mean?????

I bet you watched Willies Wonky Chocolate Factory on Sunday evening, which would explain part of it at least!

It means that you were probably thinking about many of the things from your dream a short time before the dream occurred (a short time is a few minutes to a few days). Dreams are the expression of the subconscious mind; they are fragments of thoughts and memories that your sleeping brain can't quite make sense of. They don't necessarily mean anything, but can bring to light things that have been on your mind recently, even if you don't recall them being on your mind. That, or you hold a secret desire to attack a half-blind, disabled, ex-body-building Chinese marketing manager.

Is this merely theory (although very plausible theory if so), or is it actually proven fact?

You know what, now that I think about it, I'm not sure. I looked into dreams and dream interpretations a couple of years, for reasons that are neither important nor interesting, and that it what I remember the definition of dreaming to be, but I never really looked into it too deeply, so I really don't know if it is a psychological theory, if it's been tested and 'proved' or whatever. I may have to look into this now.

A friend of mine did a five (I think) year study of sleep as part of her PhD, and I remember her saying that even after all the research that's gone into the subject we still know for certain almost nothing about the triggers, mechanisms or purpose of dreams. Let me know what you find out Console, I'm intrigued now!

I wish I could remember my dreams.

After a bit of research, I've found that I was referring to a formal hypothesis known as activation-synthesis. This hypothesis puts forward the notion that dreams are caused by 'random' firing on neurons in the brain (a part of the heightened brain activity during REM sleep) which causes emotions and memories (particularly short-term and mid-term memories) to be recalled. The firing neurons also would cause muscle movement, but due to an amino-acid called glycine* the motor-neurons of the brain are essentially disabled. The 'thought' of movements, coupled with the recalled memories and emotions are interpreted by the brain, which, in trying to understand which it is 'seeing', links together the fragments it has into a sort of story, or a sequence of events - this is what activation-synthesis hypothesis argues that dreams are, the interpretation of miscellaneous memories and sensory information by the brain. The dreams have as much meaning as the memories and feelings that are involved in the creation of the dream. It's not necessarily relevant or important, but not completely random either (as recent memories and thoughts are involved).

* This part is fact, glycine is produced during REM sleep and does disable motor function - probably so that any actions that take place in a dream won't occur in real life, which could endanger a persons life.

Interesting - still hypthetical though. However the glycine part is fascinating - and makes me wonder if such things could be measured in an individual - for instance, would someone who regularly sleepwalks possibly be affected by an interruption in the production of glycine during REM sleep? Would this be measurable? What might cause it?

People don't sleepwalk during REM sleep, so glycine wouldn't have been released (at least not in significant enough quantities).

I read a book recently about something called level 5 dreamers, it was all fiction, but the thrust of it was that you could take some facts, saw evidence from a crime, and put these into your dream and then somehow find out who did it or where to look, it was fascinating.

I like dreams, I have had some great ones recently where I save the world / beat the baddies / put out fires etc I love them. I know it shows that I need to get out more but hey !

Thought you would like that one I_Love_You. Simmilar story:

My mother has the same type of thing, she dreams folks are pregnant, and then in the following weeks finds out the person she was dreaming about is pregnant. Sometimes the person who she thinks will be pregnant does not know themselves but a week or so later and they have the test and Bang! Bun in the oven. So far she has had 5+ dreams like that. She is no clairvoyant, but how wierd! 8O
