Yudster's choice. I didn't get a nomination from Johnny 1989, but I just decided to choose form Zoot's and Yudster's suggestions.

1975?

It was on a 1973 album, but according to Wikipedia "released as a single in late 1974, "Free Bird" became the band's second Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1975, where it peaked at #19."

I'm still deciding, it's between five at the moment.

A number one from November 1975 for me.

OK - I think I've decided. I almost went for Steve Harley and * Rebel, then I almost went for ELO - Strange Magic, then I was set on Mandy by Barry Manilow... in the end, though it's between The Carpenters (Please Mr Postman) and Sweet (Ballroom Blitz).

Carpenters gets it (unless I change my mind).

Easy choice for me;

Average White Band - Pick Up The Pieces.

It charted in September 1976 I think and was re-released a few years later, can't remember when. Its a great track though so don't ban it on my account!

When I said I'm still deciding, I meant I'm still deciding on my choice, not whether to ban that or not.

I'm glad someone did, it wouldn't be right not to have it as an option really.

Paul Rodgers was the front man for Free before joining Bad Company. He was probably the model for most other growly rockers like David Coverdale etc. Anyway, we've all sung this refrain at some point but it's the simple guitar riff that's most memorable. Upon blasting out the chorus with my growliest schoolboy voice my mum would often respond with "oh..err..luvverly singing dear"

Zoot beat me to my first choice. Check out their Whistle Test appearance.

Sorry, there were other options, but as Yuds said, how could it not be up?!

How could you not go for that? Make Me Smile is one of my favourite songs of all time, so that gets my vote.
