Should people old enough to work and competent enough to get a job in the first place be old enough to decide what to wear to work?

theres no strict dress code where i work but everyone wears ties anyway. i think the thing about dressing smart is that it puts you in a work frame of mind. when facing the public i think its essential.

See, I agree with part of that - it is essential when you're facing the customers - however, I don't think I work any better because I have a shirt and tie on.

I will wear a suit to make a good first impression, but other than that I don't like it. Makes me feel like work is all serious and no fun (which it shouldn't be - it should be a "get the job done, and still have some fun.")

but if anyone visits the office do you run off an hide? what about peoples impressions of the company as you walk into work? It also would take away from the getting home and changing out of your work clothes - might be just me but i think its a psychological thing.

If you work with the public, say on a train or in a shop or something like that then you definitely have to wear one - so customers know you're part of the staff & so on, & just to look smart, but if you're in an office then there's no reason really, although I think wherever you work there has to be some sort of dress code.

I'd prefer to wear a work uniform because it'd save you money on buying loads of clothes, you don't have to decide what to wear in the morning, & yeah there's a whole psychological thing.

I'd still rather wear my own clothes. Of course there has to be a limit, things which could be deemed offensive should not be worn - i.e. those people = shit slipknot tops, although I would never wear a slipknot top anyway.

I must be thick, I don't get the psychological aspect of it.

Put your work uniform on, gets you into the mood for work, come home, get changed out of your "work clothes" & in the mood for relaxing. I'd feel like I'd still have to have separate clothes for work - if I wanna wear something I've worn to work I sort of look at it & associate it with work. :/

I worked at a hotel bar during the summer and I had to wear a shirt, tie and waistcoat. It was really hot and uncomfortable, but I suppose it's fair enough because you need to give a good impression to the clientelle.

Are there any unsexy uniforms?

Nudist models don't have the option

My work's uniform is nasty, a baggy navy sweatshirt (we aint allowed them tight incase the customers "get ideas"), black trousers and shoes and a navy pinny. if thats sexy, then Im an onion!

If anyone turns up for work in a suit, management get worried, thinking that person has an interview somewhere else. The closest thing most people do to being smart is to make sure they wear clean clothes (the three people who don't all have desks together at the far end of the office after the recent reshuffle).
Think if I was going to meet clients, I'd wear a suit as it shows to them you're serious about them (even if you're not).

you can tell when gradstudents around here are getting jobs because they all have fresh haircuts and wear suits. i just wear what ever trashy clothes i wear to class to work, my bosses don't dress up either, but then again, it's the mail room. upstairs, they all dress up. upstairs, they all suck.

I know that feeling, are they all salesmen?

sorta. it's the business office for the college. they get paid to kiss ass. they all think they're hotshots, but the do none of the work. the ones who don't dress up too much are okay, as they're not trying to prove anything.
