I know loads of you are at uni, and I'm looking at going in September (not leaving it late or anything like... )

ANYWAY I'm looking at computery/business courses, so it'd be very very very helpful to me if those of you who are doing those kinds of things (even if you're not) could tell me what course you're doing & what it's like, & maybe a bit about the uni? One of the unis on the massive list I've got is Sheffield Hallam, I know someone here is there (Sidla?).

I know Ad is doing something businessy too.

Oh yeah, & those of you at uni, where do you all live? Home, halls of residence, or a house somewhere near uni, how much is it costing you?

I fancy somewhere North or Midlands really since it'll be cheaper.

Useless fact of the day: Hallam has the second largest table tennis league in the country, next to Bristol. Sorry, I'm in a boring mood.

Other than that I don't know about unis, I'm not planning to go... yet.

BTW, what qualifications are you going with Magenta? I would like to see what my chances are if I do want to go later.

Business degrees from manc uni are supposed to be highly considered (especially now its merging with UMIST). Dont go to salford uni if you can avoid it because manc met. is same standard in better area. Also university of central lanc and Lancaster are out of the way... dont whatever you do consider bolton (although i dont think its an actual uni)

Well, at the end of this year i'm only gonna have 1 A level (good grade in ICT) & 4 AS - long story!! - so the likleyhood is that I'll have to do a HND, then possibly a top up year to a full degree, or start a HND then show them how quality & intelligent I am & get moved to the full degree course at some point...

Unless I can get accepted onto a degree course.

okay, there are plenty of computer and business courses on offer. some unis offer a sandwich course which you can study both subjects at the same time.

refinin your req'ments is good and to let us know what your studying and planning to get grades wise

i'm currently ending my 2nd year in BA accounting, finance and management. i'm enjoying myself and its a good degree to do.

there are loads of books to help you out. so its best to hop on down the local bookshop and invest in one or two.

try these:

The Virgin 2003 Alternative Guide to British Universities and Student Book 2003 are also very good books

try leeds met, nottingham trent, Sheff Hal, DeMon etc etc ~(infact look at trent - because the city offers loads for a student to be like yourself

try all options. you may get enought points to go and do a degree, but if you feel that HMD is a beter option then go for it. i was wanting to do HND at one point

you obviously havent been that often. manchester is a really good student city and a nice city in general. its much better than liverpool (not hard) i cant comment on sheffield but leeds is naff too.

Cheers Ad... I was wanting the degree option really but the careers lady I saw was pushing me towards the HND options - all I can do really is ring the unis & ask what they'll let me do.

To be honest I'm a bit funny about cities in general, I wanted to go somewhere pretty, & middle of nowhere like Keele, cos I can envisage being mugged & getting myself into all sorts of trouble, among other things!!

If you want to do a computing course then Warwick is meant to be the best for that kind of thing. My ex did computer science there

I did an HND in Computing at De Montfort in Leicester, and then jumped straight onto the final year of the degree course and got my degree that way. I lived in houses near to Uni and it cost me about £35 a week rent, which was a bargain.

I don't know alot about unis as I don't go to one, but notingham is a great student city, and some of the nottingham university campus is really pretty. And Nottingham uni is better than trent uni i think. And whats that uni in Wales that sounds like its out the way, and it begins with an A.hope you can make sense of that.

I've been there. Its one of them places like Newport Pagnell (about three miles from me) where everyone has been through it and probably filled up witth petrol from the M1 / M6, but no one actually knows what is there.

Aberystwyth Katy? I had a look at that. Thing is, all the places that do computer kinda courses seem to be in disgusting city areas, when really after living in a minging town all my life i'd quite like some pretty countryside & nice views & a LAKE! Like at Keele.

I suppose in terms of the area it's just best to go & have a look yourself? I can get all the advice in the world from people, but generally I think they tell you what they'd do themselves rather than what they think is best for ME to do...

obviously really that nu is better than trent. trent takes students with slightly lower grades. nottingham came out most popular uni and had a higher intake than previous.

if you want a great three years than go and check out Notts T. the campus are good, the nightlife is good. the people are good. if you like your shops, then this is your place.

nottingham t provides over 15 business courses and 10 computer courses.

The advantage of Sheffield is that the council spend quite a lot of money on making the town look nice. The Peace Gardens in the town centre are a great place for lunch on a sunny day and just before christmas they opened the new Winter Gardens which is basically a big greenhouse filled with tropical plants.

Sheffield Hallam is also a very nice place to study. There's never a shortage of computers and the facilities are very good too. Our course has two sister courses one of which is Business Network Engineering which is very similar to our course but it is from more of a business point of view.

I'm in halls but my parents pay, so not certain about costs. Looks like I'll probably be back in halls next year too.

warwick: its also very hard to get into. you probably wouldnt get accepted its like durham, which has something like one pub. okay, thats a lie - but it feels like that.

lancaster: generally its the same as any other student city or town. its obviosuly gonna be lively because its home to, two uni's. University of Central Lancashire (Preston) and Lancaster University.

nottingham: yeah, go and check it out. you'll be impressed.

I enrolled to this course (Computer Network Engineering) as HND because I only got 6 points at A-Level, but they moved me up to the full degree after the first semester, when they realised my superior intellect.

Well if we are looking at what would be best for Magenta then it sounds like you want to go to Keele.And yes that is the A place I was thinking of

UEA's supposed to be nice too, but quite a long way out of town. I think it's quite difficult to get into too.

That's the thing - I know I've got the intelligence/skills/blah blah to do what the degree course if I wanted to - it's just I messed up my first year of A levels & ended up doing what I am now, which will reflect badly on me probably, but I really can't be doing with another year at college. So I might ring round a few of the admissions offices at the unis & see what they say to me.

If you start on HND, most unis will offer you a place on the full degree after the first semester if you do well enough.
