I need help from stix or the_dr or someone - whenever I try to get on Napster, gnutella or even the_dr's gnutty site it comes up with this: <P>"Oxford University Web Proxy Cache <br>Error: Access to the requested URL has been denied <P>Access to this site has been blocked because it can result in excessive bandwidth usage." <P>Is there anyway of getting around this?  I'd appreciate any help thanks.<P>Oh and by the way stix, I've been searching around for a cd-writer in college but can't find one - if you or anyone else has webspace I could still upload some Simpsons episodes if you ike.

It seems their blocking access.. hmm. It could be an error, contact a technician, or if it's not then you need to change the proxy and port settings.<P>On Napster and Gnutella - changing the port number if the easiest way to get past this filtering software, just change the 'Listen to' port number, not the number of the server. Thats important. As for using another proxy server, try searching on the net for lists of proxy servers. You could try and use Freeserves proxy, but I'm not sure whether they alllow non-freeservers on.<P>Hope that helps, I'm just gussing at what the problem is.<P>the_dr

I probabby wasn't specific enough - the uni blocks our access deliberately as it blocks up their bandwidth.<P>Thanks for that Dr, much appreciated, but what do you mean exactly by changing the port number, and how do I do it - and change it to what?  And are there loads of proxy servers that are easy to link up to?<P>Sorry if I sound totally computer illiterate, as I am!!

Unis/colleges are becoming really strict in what you can and can't do on the net.<P>My college (I've now left - hooray!) only allowed to to use BT Talk21 for your email. But they were stupid enough not to block any others. So I used Hotmail and got a rollocking. So they do check their logs!<P>The reason for the proxy server is so they can restrict what you can do. You could try turning proxy server off in the browser/napster settings, but the uni have probably blocked access to any port unless it's channeled through the proxy. Changing the proxy to Freeserve for example would not get you anywhere.<P>Like I said earlier, they will check their logs and anyone using more than the average bandwidth over time will be in trouble...especially if they find it's down to napster...<P>M

Many unis and even ISPs now use a 'transparent proxy', which means even if you don't configure your software - you still automatically use their proxy. Freeserve do this, and so does my schools network. We try porn sites but they come up with their own personalised denied page. We do get through to the porn sites sometimes though... but we don't use our logins! God damiit!!! napster sucks arse, the best one tosay is morpheus. Get it from <A HREF="http://www.download.com." TARGET=_blank>www.download.com.</A>  It's like napster but u can pause downloads, and share movies software as well as mp3's. Get it now and then download like mad!<P>Got to download.com then search for morpheus.

does it have 'on my own' from les miserables? i've tried to download it from loads of places on napster (i searched for it months ago when it was still working) said it had no files of that name, mp3worldwide or something said it didn't have it either
