Ok I am considering buying a new computer and just need to know if there is anything essential that I need to make sure it has. I don't do anything too technical mostly using word, excel, outlook and maybe at most designing posters an the like. I just want something that will be a bit faster and more reliable... my current computer is about 8 years old.

My PC meets my needs, but I don't really do anything too demanding. It's probably the most reliable PC I've used since the days of DOS (by reliable I mean in terms of crashes per week, cpw as it's called in the field).

I don't really play games, and what games I do play it copes with fine and it has on-board graphics. If you are a heavy gamer then Bob's advice is useful.

We're getting to the stage now where CD's are becoming obsolete, so a DVD Writer would be an added bonus. At the very least it should have a CD-RW/DVD combo.

I don't think you need to go over the top if Office apps is all you use. This PC cost £499 and I would imagine it would suit your needs. I can recommend eMachines.

Another few queries.. might be a sidla question again. How easy is it to set up a website address and what are the costs likely to be? what I want is to set up a site so I can get an email address from it. I would like to then be able for a number of people to have access to that email address - is that possible? This is a work think so I need to get a proper answer an look like I know what I am talking about.

also it looks now like i may be getting broadband as well as a new comp.

we are probably more a .org anyway. all this confuses me though. what we need is a way of having one email address that can be accessed by a number of people. the difficulty is that we can't use hotmail or freeserve or whatever so we though getting a site itself would be best. all we need the site to do is redirect to another address.

its the email that we need something like mailto:[email protected] but for simple folk with simple minds like me.

many providers or hosting services can set that stuff up for you or give you easy step by step instructions on how to do it. i'd check out different providers. i, unfortunately, got some cheap ass one with no support. i'm screwed with out my geek friends teaching me what to do.

Some web hosts offer email only packages, sounds like you want that. Don't you work for local government? In which case .gov.uk would be what you want? It depends on how many email addresses you want really...

These might be useful: http://www.icuknet.co.uk/email_only_home.asp
http://www.pickaweb.co.uk/web-site-hosting-uk.htm (look at the packages at the bottom.)
http://www.alphad.co.uk/host_eh.html

Try to go for something in the UK anyway. And ask them if they will give you details of people who are already hosted by their plans, cos then you can ask their opinion.

Ok folks thanks for the help. Having looked at the sites I think I understand a bit.

What I seem to want is this Webmail that things talk about so that anyone can check the emails by visiting the site? The only question I have with this is how do you log in? do they give you another page to do that?

If we do actually get a site my guess is we would just redirect to another is this easy?

that 123-reg seems to be cheaper to get a site that to have webmail on t'other.

oh an topher its complicated its to do with my wotsit that i'm studying for more than work.

See, I wasn't needed after all that. I'm no expert on setting up websites anyway, it's dead easy at uni, you just put it all in the public_html directory and there it is.

ATI graphics cards are pretty good to get.
AMD Processor.
Seagate or Western Digital Hard Drives.
DDR Ram.

+ make sure the graphics and sound aren't built into the motherboard, that's asking for trouble.
