Motormouth Moyles Spins Back Listeners

Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles has added almost a million listeners to the breakfast show in the past year, figures showed today.

His audience is now 6.14 million – 910,000 up on his predecessor Sara Cox.

And Radio 1 bosses are celebrating after the station’s total audience rose back above the psychologically important 10 million mark for the first time since July 2003.

The revival in the station’s fortunes is due in no small part to Moyles, the "self-styled saviour of Radio 1" who took over the breakfast show in January.

The motormouth DJ pulled in 6.14 million listeners among the 15-plus age group in the three months from July to September, according to figures published by industry body Rajar.

The figure is 910,000 up on the same period last year when Cox was at the helm and 350,000 up on Moyles’ previous quarter.

Cox was axed from the breakfast slot after haemorrhaging listeners. She moved to host the afternoon show and is currently on maternity leave.

Taking into account the 4-plus age group, Moyles’ audience rose to 7.41 million, up 1.17 million on this time last year.

A Radio 1 spokesman said: "We are obviously pleased with these results both for the station and for Chris."

But the station’s success was "not just about the numbers", he said, stressing that a commitment to breaking new music remained a key focus.

Tuning In To Chris Moyles

DJ Chris Moyles has brought in nearly one million new listeners to his Radio 1 breakfast show.

New figures show his audience has risen to 6.14 million during the past year.

Moyles is boasting an increase of 910,000 on his predecessor Sara Cox who left the show in January and is now on maternity leave.

A Radio 1 spokesman said: "We are obviously pleased with these results both for the station and for Chris."

The DJ started his radio career at the age of 16 on Aire FM in Leeds and has worked on several stations, including Radio Luxembourg and London's Capital FM.

He joined Radio 1 in 1997 and has styled himself as "The Saviour of Early Morning Radio", taking over the breakfast show in January.

According to industry body Rajar the DJ pulled in 6.14 million listeners from the 15-plus age group from July to September.

The spokesman said the success was "not just about numbers" and the station's key focus was still about introducing new music.

Meanwhile Johnny Vaughan has lost 144,000 listeners from his breakfast show on London's Capital FM, taking his audience down to just over one million.
