As the Sound Vault has just reached 1500 clips, I thought I'd share some facts and figures about the clips which the site provides - and make a plea for more Sound Vault mirror servers.
As of the time of writing the various individuals who have contributed to the Sound Vault over the years have saved more than 108 hours of classic Moyles for you to relive and enjoy (that's nearly ten 12-hour days of listening!). Particular credit for recent years must go to our message board regulars Console and Dickie. Console has recently completed a fantastic back-end system which automates much of the manual work that used to be required to add the greatest moments to our Sound Vault.
We would also like to mention the kind support of the people who provide the servers from which you download these clips, we wouldn't be able to provide such a service without their support. Our four Sound Vault mirror servers deliver almost 360GB of clips every month - that's the equivalent of about 10 million people downloading this page you're reading now. The site itself continues to grow steadily, last month serving more than 1.5 million pages (or 9.7 million 'hits').
Unfortunately this weekend we will lose one of our four mirror servers and we are keen to replace it so as not to overload the remaining servers. If you - or your company - can help with this, then please drop me a line at mailto:[email protected]. As you will see on the Sound Vault pages, we do offer a text or graphic banner placement if required in exchange for the kind use of your server.
The machine needs to be linux-based, and we need SSH access to be able to set up the mirroring service. Being able to cope with the bandwidth (approx 90GB/month) and space requirements (upwards of 6GB) are also important.
Thanks for visiting, listening and downloading - let's have a record-breaking September.
