As you probably know by now (if not where on earth have you been), today is Sport Relief Saturday. With Chris Moyles busy running in Leeds, Scott Mills in Southampton and Dave and Chappers next door, Vernon Kay had a busy final hour catching up with his Radio One colleagues as the pre race tension mounted. Moyles was on twice before 1pm, the second time around backstage in a very soundproof VIP tent. He helped Vernon with a final push on the text message front and also ran through his accompanying posse this afternoon - Greyhead, his girlfriend Sophie, his Mum, his Dad, Scooby Steve from Security and his Uncle Jim. Chris said his Dad (who recently had a quadruple heart bypass don’t y’know) was wearing one of those Sport Relief baseball caps that covered the whole of his face. After letting Chris go and wishing him the best of luck, Chappers and Dave joined proceedings to protest with Vernon after he accidentally broke Chappers’ treadmill while on it in the Live Lounge during the previous segway. Vernon said that he felt guilty but admitted that he did enjoy the sight of Chappers, Dave and Neil trying to fix the roller next door like some sort of Formula One team. Mark described how the whole bracket had become bent and knackered, although Dave did say that if BBC Health & Safety were listening then there was of course nothing to worry about *cough*. Vernon did the whole “Hello, this is Big Brother. Radio One speaking!” thing at 12.59pm, and then a 30 second countdown followed that was voiced by American Paul Turner. The station then cut away from the big national launch to go to Chappers and Dave, both beginning their miles on incredibly cheap (and now broken) treadmills in the Live Lounge. They had been joined in there by virtually everyone working at Radio One today, who all took their seats on various beanbags and sat back to enjoy the show. Chappers said he hoped they felt guilty, sitting on their arses there as him and Dave did their bit for charidee. They made a big point of thanking those hilarious people in the Radio One music department too, who had scheduled four 2 minute songs to begin with...therefore making Chappers and Dave talk in between each of them with no segway anywhere. Mark asked where on earth Bohemian Rhapsody was when you needed it. The out of breath Dave decided against running in an act of demonstration against his treadmill’s milometer, which insisted he’d only run 0.32 of a mile after six minutes. Chappers wondered whether Vernon had been tampering with the milometer too. Dave described it as a “nightmare” and said he couldn’t wait for it to end. It eventually did, after 10 minutes and 37 seconds. Not a great time for two men supposedly in their prime, and predictably they started making their excuses straight away. A dripping Chappers wanted to point out that the treadmills were on a slope and self powered, not battery operated. Dave also added that they didn’t subscribe to the bad workmen blaming their tools theory, but their cheapo treadmills certainly did hinder their progress. Dave said he felt surprisingly shattered considering he has done a 10K run in his time, and Mark said despite never having a particular problem with running while playing football every week, he found that really difficult.
Chappers - It’s the pressure of having to perform on air
Dave - Do you think?
Chappers - Yes (laughs), I have to suffer with it every week...have you not been listening?
(Chappers, Dave and Producer Neil laugh)

GRAND TEXT TOTAL PLUS MOYLES AND MILLS - THE REACTION:
Image
The text lines finally closed at 1pm then and Mr Dave (great with the Maths) Vitty spread news of the final total to both Chris and Scott when they linked up for separate post race chats before 2 o’clock. Remember Dave’s new catchphrase too: ”Texts make pounds, and pounds...make people happy”

THE RESULTS:>>>>
- MOYLES - 123,389 texts = £86,372.30 raised
- MILLS (bringing up the rear...*good mornin*) - 61,813 texts = £43,269.10 raised
- TOTAL - 185,202 texts - £129,641.40 raised

Both Scott and Chris were understandably delighted with the total and thanked everyone listening for their support. They both appeared briefly in footage on BBC One’s Sport Relief later in the evening, with Scott admitting that he actually sprinted the last 100 metres of The Mills Mile with the local camera crew in sight. Chris completed the race in 8 minutes 2 seconds, 7 seconds faster than Davina McCall who had text him. Scott finished in a time of 10 minutes, which he seemed fairly content with (he said there was a pub by the finishing line so he was off for a white wine in a sec). Mills ran with such leg ends as Anton from Strictly Come Dancing and Kate Lawler, while Moyles was shoved straight to the front and had to cope with a rather serious lady runner literally elbowing him out of the way and shouting “Move!!” down his ear hole. Just after he got off the line from talking to Mark and Dave, Chris headed off do to a second lap...although this time at walking pace with his Dad and family. More info on The Moyles Mile will appear in a special reviews page entry later today, entitled “Sport Relief Round Up”.

Image
It may have been two weeks since Mark and Dave’s last show in Portugal, but their Portugoal Of The Month tournament only drew to a conclusion today. The full 12 goals were played out again, with the listeners having to text in their top 3 to correspond in order with the choice of the show’s top celebrity panel - Scott Mills, Tim Westwood and Dave Pearce. Ben on the A11 claimed the golden ticket type prize of a free pass to all of Radio One’s UK based Summer Events, including Reading & Leeds, Creamfields, The Notting Hill Carnival, One Big Weekend and One Live In Norwich (more on that in a minute). Other stuff today included the very weird Alex winning VIP tickets to Wakestock 2004 @ Abersoch Bay next weekend on 3 And In, and Sharon picking the rubbish Sporting Number One of Where Is The Love by The Black Eyed Peas, this to coincide with Michael Schumacher winning his sixth record breaking Formula One World Title last October in the Japanese Grand Prix. Chappers was also really excited by a song played by Tongy and Zane last week, which he is now “championing” himself. It’s by Mylo and is called “In My Arms”, and samples one of his favourite records by Boy Meets Girl (Waiting For A Star To Fall) and also Kim Carnes’ Bette Davis Eyes (target). Mark felt this made him credible now, although Producer Neil wanted him to stop playing it and put on Bad Ass Strippa by Jentina (no really he did).
Chappers - Can I play it next week as well?
Dave - It’s not to do with me. You’ll have to ask Neil
Chappers (to Neil) - Can I play that next week?
Neil - We’ll see
Chappers - Mylo and In My Arms..
Dave (interrupting and laughing) - It’s a no!!
(all laugh)
Dave - “We’ll see” always means a no

RADIO ONE ON THE ROAD IN NORWICH NEXT WEEKEND
Image
Next Saturday Dave and Chappers will be coming live from the Sportspark on Earlham Road in Norwich, where they’ll be joined for live music by McFly. After the show there is a Boys and Girls 5 a side tournament with Chappers, Dave, Dr Mark, Colin Murray and Spoony (I think) taking part. The girls team will consist of Emma B, Georgina Bowman and Natalie Jamieson from Newsbeat, with Letitia and Nesha from 1Xtra (and Edith as sub). She’ll be live from Norwich on Sunday with Girls Aloud. Full details can be found here @ Radio One ONLINE.
