Last night was Radio 1 DJ Dinner night and the first one since Chris started on breakfast. The idea was that he would leave early to get his beauty sleep, but somehow or other he ended up staying until midnight, the latest time he’s left any DJ Dinner ever. He made up for it by oversleeping and was feeling awake and perky by the time the show went on air today. Jo Whiley was honoured last night during the DJ Dinner and given a special testimonial prize to celebrate 10 big years at Radio 1. Chris thought it was perhaps the coolest present he’d ever seen and Dave said the entire room went speechless when they saw it. Chris wouldn’t reveal what it was but urged people to text in to Jo at 10 asking her to say what it was. If she said what it was and you heard then please e-mail me (link at top) as my tape didn’t record that far and I was stuck in the middle of a blizzard at the time. (EDIT - According to the host on the Radio 1 message boards it was a song by Bono and The Edge, especially written and performed for her celebrating her being at Radio 1 for 10 years). Slaphead news boy Bryne wasn’t having the best of times describing the snow and the UK weather in general today, with various texts coming in saying that he was wrong. Aled Jones was on the phones and recorded short messages from callers saying it either was or wasn’t snowing where they were. Two short packages of clips were put together and Chris played them out after the 8 and 8:30 weather forecasts. One of the clips was from a little girl saying it was snowing and “daddy’s stuck on the motorway”. Dom thought she had said her daddy was sat on the microwave. Chris was pleased as it was snowing in London and his mum sent him a text telling him it was snowing and bitterly cold in Leeds aswell. Aled was sent out into the cold (in his Roy Cropper coat) to fetch breakfast for the team. Today is Weekly Weightwatchers Weigh In Wednesday for Rachel so she was trying her best to avoid eating the bacon and sausage sandwiches placed in front of her by Chris. She lost 2 lbs last week and the big results of today’s Weigh In will be on tomorrows show.

Chris has at last begun his 2004 training regime by joining a gym (as he revealed on yesterday’s show) and yesterday afternoon he went for a “gym induction”, which involved looking around the swimming facilities. For the second time in two days Chris spotted his fat friend from Oz, Mr Jono Coleman. Chris couldn’t believe it when he spotted him and Jono turned round to give him a big wave. Dave predicts that they will be training partners and drinking buddies by the end of the year, like all the other famous people Chris slags off and then becomes friends with (Vernon Kay being the prime example). On his little gym tour Chris also happened to note the lack of doors on the shower cubicles, mainly brought to his attention by some bloke’s hairy arse sticking out at him. Chris wasn’t best pleased to say the least and said he can see the situation in his head already where one day himself and Jono will bump into each other in the showers with no doors. His official quote went something like “Aaaarrrrghhhhhh”. Chris played Fell In Love With A Boy by Joss Stone and talked again about the time he met her and spoke on the phone to her younger sister at school. He said she was called Flint. It took Dave a few seconds to work out the Flint Stone gag. Chris also had the new single from Beenie Man to play. Chris hadn’t even heard it but knew it would be ruuubish. Dave on the other hand was staying corporate and said he couldn’t disagree with him more. It was actually OK and certainly wasn’t the worst record on the show today (Lumidee and Ultrabeat take some beating though). After 9 Chris also played the new Obie Trice single called “The Set Up”....
Chris - It’s not as good as Got Some Teeth
Dave - Hmm. Maybe it’s a grower
Chris - The album’s alright though
Dave - Is it?
Chris - yeah
Dave (sarcastically) - I’d like to borrow it off you one day...
Chris - Well, I’d never get it back
Chris - Oh you would. Within the hour probably...
(Both Chris & Dave laugh)

THE GRIT AWARDS 2004:
The show today was the best so far this week by a mile and contained the awards ceremony that literally people have been talking about, The Grit Awards 2004. Mr Alan Dedicoat, Wogan’s news man and the voice of the balls himself had been tempted by Chris’s offer of free lunch and had recorded a full set of jingles for The Grit Awards yesterday. The whole awards “ceremony” had taken Chris an hour and a half to make with the audience sound effects etc giving it the full production. It was borderline genius. Live from “some council dump”, Chris played the crap cheesy host (using such gags as “It really is grit to be here”) and handed out the big four awards to the hardest working gritters in the UK (all 4 had recorded messages that were played in by Chris):

BEST MALE GRITTER - WINNER: Dips in London
BEST FEMALE GRITTER - WINNER: Jo (Whiley) from Northampton
BEST NEWCOMER TO GRITTING: Darren from Gloucester (was funny)
OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO GRITTING WINNER: Matt from Peterborough

TAKE THE TRUCK TO THE TOON:
The plans have been finalised for the big trip north this Friday. Tomorrow lunchtime the whole team (including Dom + Jules) will catch a train up to Newcastle, arriving in late afternoon. After a quick check on the studio they will be hitting the bars and pubs of Newcastle for “a few drinks”. I’m thinking there’ll be a few hangovers on Friday morning then. Chris wanted to know where to go and asked for suggestions from the Geordies listening (There’s some here. Look out for the comment on there supposedly from the Metro Radio DJ Wayne, that Chris was slagging yesterday BTW). Chris fancies a bit of a karaoke session by the Tyne and sorted out what songs people would be singing tomorrow:
RACHEL - A Whitney number
DOM - Suspicious Minds by Elvis
COMEDY DAVE - Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes - I’ve Had The Time Of My Life (on his own - wouldn’t duet with Aled)
ALED - Rachel said she’d duet with Aled on a number from Grease (Dave suggested the megamix)
JULES - Beyond The Sea
CHRIS - Ain’t that a kick in the head - a bit of swing
The show will then come live from BBC Radio Newcastle on Friday, with Aled out and about in the city in the front of the big Radio 1 postered truck. (The whole point of visiting is because none of the show billboards are up in Newcastle). Chris is asking for listener pics in front of billboards to go on his R1 mini-site and this is his favourite so far (Ryan in Coventry):

Dave Pearce is gigging at Promises at Foundation in Newcastle on Friday. If Chris and Dave stay the night they said they might pay him a visit, but as their not being paid there won’t be any big Ibiza/Brighton mixes going on. Today’s Buzz Off had a slight Geordie feel to it as it was If I Ever Lose My Faith In You by Sting. Rachel and Aled buzzed before the 10 second mark, the listeners on 2 mins 20 and surprisingly last of all was Dave on 2:44. He said he knows it isn’t cool to do so but he does actually like that record. After 5 years of earlies you’d think Scott Mills would be making the most of his lie-ins now but apparently not after he texted Chris at 7:30 saying he was listening to the show. Chris did an impression of Scott that sounded identical to his Paddy O’Connell impression. Scott said on his Sky Channel 851 it said there was “mayhem” coming up in the show this morning. This prompted Chris’s usual BBC Local Radio piss take link just before 8, where he reminded everyone of the horoscopes and What’s On Guide coming up later, aswell as the latest on the roads with Comedy Dave in the travel centre.

CARPARK CATCHPHRASE:
BECKY a sales rep from Torbay 2
FRAN (also a sales rep) from Basingstoke 1

* Chris only had time to play 30 seconds of Wayne Wonder before Tedious Link today. It was down to 2 main reasons, 1 - Rachel’s crap backtiming and 2 - The fact that it was Wayne Wonder.

Daves Tedious Link

CHRIS UP FOR NME AWARD:
Image
Chris has been nominated for Best Radio Show at this years NME Awards. He’s up against Zane Lowe, Steve Lamacq, Colin & Edith and Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant (XFM in London). He doesn’t really stand much chance but why not vote anyway. The direct link to the voting page is - http://microsites.nme.com/nmeawards/2004/vote.html
