So here we go then. The first of Chappers and Dave’s eleven special summer sports shows kicked off this lunchtime, with special guest Rio Ferdinand, new competitions, plenty of footy chat and a few records thrown in as well. In fact fact fans, the 27 tunes played in the two hours is normally more than Chris plays in three hours on the breakfast show. Before starting at 1, both Chappers and Dave dropped in for a brief chat on Vernon’s show, where they spent a bit of time suggesting possible names for his and Tess’s new baby (Jay Jay Kay and Marvin Kay were the best two). They also took part in Vernon’s Eurovision Sweepstake (Dave has Norway, Chappers has Russia) and played a quick round of Top Telephone Trumps, their new game on which I’ll mention more later.
Chappers (to Vernon) - Dave came up with this idea just cos he wants to try and get your wife’s phone number out of your phone by the end of the eleven weeks
(all laugh) Vernon - Dave!! How dare you!!
Dave - I’ve already got it. It’s on the BBC Internal List anyway!!
(Vernon laughs)

The new show ran smoothly virtually all the way through, which was slightly surprising as Chappers was driving the desk. Dave talked briefly about the press he’s been doing for the show and thanked both Zoo magazine and today’s Daily Mail for their over optimistic previews, especially the Mail who gave the show 4 stars out of 5 despite the fact that it hadn’t even been on. Dave was interviewed on page 30 of last Sunday’s Star (he’s hit the big time), with a typo on his partner “Dave Chapman”. West Ham fan Neil was producing and Dave and Mark frequently made reference to the ongoing play off game which they were losing 1-0 to Ipswich. The best feature by far was “Sporting Number Ones”, which will run at 2:10 every week. From next week it will be chosen by a listener and is their great sporting memory from the past (complete with commentary clips) and the record that was number one at that time played in full. Obviously if the records are rubbish then they can’t run that particular memory, which was the case for Chappers choice of United winning the treble in May 99 (Boyzone) and in Dave’s case Everton beating United in the May 95 Cup Final (Robson & Jerome). Instead Chappers chose the Palace - United 3-3 Cup Final draw in May 1990, coincidentally allowing him to play Killer by Adamski. You can submit your suggestions online here. Note: it’s not just footy memories, they can be cycling, snooker, egg chasing or as Dave bizarrely suggested...long jump. In contrast to this idea, the worst feature was “Record Of The Week”, funny on paper but not as it turned out on air. As opposed to playing a record of the week, Dave read out a world record of the week (y’see what he did there)...which surely should have been a sporting one for it to have any relevance whatsoever. No though, it was the record for the world’s heaviest raccoon, which by the way is 24.7 kg (54 lbs). Information for the nation.

RIO FERDINAND INTERVIEW:>>>>
Dave and Chappers headed up to the capital of England Manchester on Monday afternoon, to interview Rio Ferdinand at a special charity event for Sport Relief which helps kids in Manchester overcome racism. Both Dave and Chappers agreed he was a top guy although they only played out brief edited highlights of the interview today (hear it in full here). Rio turned down the offer to play in the Radio 1 Soccer Six team at Reading next Sunday (he said if it’s being officiated in any way he’s not allowed to play or summat..pah) and in the process won Dave a tenner, who’d bet he’d say no to Chappers on the train up.
Chappers - Alright if you can’t play, can you at least give us some tips on how to make sure that the side is prepared properly to win this tournament?
Rio - Don’t pick Spoony
(all laugh)

Rio said Christiano Ronaldo has the worst haircut of any player he’s ever played with, Eyal Berkovic has the worst dress sense and Gary Neville the worst music taste, calling him “the most single minded tunnel vision music man in the world”. Rio’s top tune at the minute is 99 Problems by Jay-Z, which they played in between interview highlights on the show. New feature Top Telephone Trumps is a 2/3 player game, with the best celebrity phone number winning the other 1/2 “best” numbers and therefore helping build up an A-List celebrity phone book. Rio won two rounds out of two with the numbers of Ian Wright and his mate Gavin....well, the competition was only DJ Spoony for that one.

Also today, Man U fan Jenny and Millwall fan Adonna won tickets to come and watch next weeks FA Cup Final live with Chappers and Dave....in Radio 1’s local pub. That’s right, no expense spared on this show. Rhianne also won 4 tickets to Soccer Six in Reading next weekend by beating Jodie in Dave’s quiz “3 and in”, which ran considerably better (and faster) than it did on Boxing Day in their Football Annual show. Dave insisted it was only a failure first time round because the callers were stupid, and was nothing at all to do with the overall mechanic of the feature (which is basically answer three questions in a row right and win, otherwise it switches over to the other caller). Other stuff on the debut show included Chappers (not known for his musical knowledge) praising the Snow Patrol album before playing Chocolate, saying it was one of the best of the year so far. I got it t’other day and have to agree. There were also little teasers dragged over the news that revealed which Radio 1 DJ had left a packet of eaten Weightwatchers biscuits in the studio bin (Jo Whiley) and Gary Neville’s favourite pop star according to the Man United PR woman (Phil Collins). Trevor *nice guy no hair* Nelson came by for a quick chat ahead of his R’n’B chart @ 3, and was greeted by a “Mr Loverman” clip that Chappers has promised to play every time they say Trevor’s name over the next eleven weeks...hmm, could become irritating.
