So as part of One Live In Norwich and Radio One’s “Get Your Kit On” summer campaign (which Dave has memorably been voicing trails for), today’s Chappers & Dave show came live from the sports park on Earlham Road in yep, Norwich. The boys were in good spirits despite the heavy downpours outside, and they linked up live with Vernon Kay for another of their pre show chats at around five to one. Vernon (who I think is quite good on Radio One now - different but good) said that after their performances on the treadmills last week, he now understands why they are the bodies of this summer fitness campaign. He said even his Dad rang him up and said they sounded knackered last week...
Dave - We were knackered but that was more to do with the sub standard apparatus that we were using
Chappers - Exactly
(Vernon laughs)
Dave ran through some of the stuff coming up on the show today. There was sadly no Delia or Alan Partridge in as live guests, but they did have the next best thing in Mr Scott Mills. Dave also added that the excitable throng of screaming young ladies (good mornin’) in the background were those waiting out in the rain for McFly...
Dave - So all the front row of the McFly audience are now rather damp...from the rain obviously
(Vernon, Chappers and crew in Norwich laugh)
Vernon - The band aren’t even there yet!
Chappers - Well done Dave
Dave - It’s Radio One On The Road in Norwich and it’s the first time we’ve been out in front of a live audience actually
Chappers - Yes. Can you tell?
(Crowd & Dave laugh)
DAVE’S CONJUNCTIVITIS AND FIVE A SIDE FOOTY CHAT:
In the last few weeks building up to One Live In Norwich you’ve probably heard Chappers and Dave asking for people to sign them and their mates up to take part in the “One Live In Norwich 5 a side football tournament”, in which Radio One have entered both a boys and girls team. Chappers made it perfectly clear that Radio One only triumphed at Soccer Six thanks to the huge number of ringers playing for them, and it’s fair to say that aside from those the team is pretty dreadful. In today’s squad are Chappers, Dave, Dr Mark Hamilton, Producer Neil and David Garido...a fearsome line up I’m sure you’ll agree. However, Dave had some bad news to break to everybody (or good news - depending upon which way you look at it). He said it was with great sadness and regret that he had to pull out of the side through injury. A genuine one too. He said that the rather ridiculous sunglasses he was wearing today (in the pouring rain) were actually not there to showbiz it up, but to protect his eyes as his acute conjunctivitis is back. Chappers wasn’t having any of it but Dave accused him of mocking the visually impaired. He said he had a bonafide doctors note on him to prove that he was unfit to play, written by none other than Radio One’s Doctor - Mr Mark Hamilton. It reads as thus:
”For the patient Mr David Vitty of Radio One London,
He should abstain from any sporting activities for a period of at least one week for the following reasons:
- BACTERIAL CONJUNCTIVITIS : Due to the infective and contagious nature of this condition, FIFA regulations forbid participation in any form of competitive football.
Signed,
Dr Mark Hamilton MB CHB BLT KFC”
Obviously the last bit’s made up (for you thickos out there). Chappers tried to claim that because the note was written on a piece of Holiday Inn paper, it was somehow therefore not valid. In the end he had to abandon all plans to make Dave wear Edgar Davids type glasses, and look for a new player. Who wasn’t Scott Mills btw. Here is the full Radio One Boys and Girls five a side teams, the lads are captained by Chappers (second left) and the ladies by Emma B (bottom centre).
SCOTT MILLS DOES HIS WACKY STUFF AND McFLY PLAY LIVE ON THE SHOW:>>>>
Yep Scott was once again given the role of being Radio One’s wacky roving reporter today, much like he was at Glastonbury. He pretty much spent the whole afternoon being forced to do things he didn’t want to, like go to the taekwondo area of the site and meet some real taekwondo players (if that’s the correct terminology). This rather burly gentleman then suggested he try out a couple of “self defence techniques” on Scott live on the air..
Scott - Will I get battered?
Taekwondo bloke - We’ll treat you gently
Scott - Not the face, not the face
(Chappers and Dave laugh)
It was hilarious listening, with Scott squealing like a woman throughout (oh hang on..). He said thankfully there was no bruising left to show for his trouble afterwards, although he didn’t enjoy the experience. The only other thing he did on this show (although you can see from the above pic he did a fair bit more), was interview a few of the five a side players from other teams in the middle of the inflatable pitch. Dave loved his line of questioning - “What are you doing here?” “Playing football”...genius.
Dave - Power kiting next then Scott
Scott - What?
(Dave and Neil laugh)
Chappers - Looking forward to it?
Scott - No I’m fed up of being the Radio One gimp
(Chappers laughs)
Dave - You do it so well though, you’re a natural
(hits Maroon 5 vocal)
Yep McFly were on live after half one, performing two acoustic tracks on stage for the massive assembled audience in the rain (who disappeared almost as soon as they finished basically). The tracks they did were Obviously and 5 Colours In Her Hair, preceded by the crowd singing happy birthday to Tom and intermitted by the vastly superior Razorlight with Golden Touch (they were great on TRL last week). Chappers and Dave were pretty chuffed with themselves as they spotted one “Chappers and Dave - Give Us A Wave” banner in the crowd. 3 And In this week was another straight win, with Justin beating fellow Canary Phil to a signed Norwich City ball, shirt and 2 tickets to their match with Man U next April. Both of them were live with them at the sports park, just like Nick who picked today’s Sporting Number One. It was from October 1993 when Norwich knocked Bayern Munich out of the UEFA Cup, with the top spot at the time being occupied by Take That and Lulu with Relight My Fire (incidentally the second Take That Sporting Number One track in just ten shows). Dave and Chappers ended by the show thanking everybody who had looked after them in Norwich, right from their showbiz H reg Nissan Micra entrance yesterday - through their Burger King tea yesterday and their time eating strawberries at this club in town called Optic last night.
