Always wanted to know something about the show? This is the place to 'Ask Aled'!

Hi Aled, are you planning to get Paul McKenna on the show again? Just wanted to suggest that you should get him in on a Friday so he can stay for the Golden Hour.

He's a great impressionist, and when he was in radio he was part of a small team who called themselves "The B****** Brothers", who produced a number of parody tapes that were circulated around the radio industry, and that's where the "Butch and Sincere, but What Was the Year" line Chris uses from time to time comes from - the sketch is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xqKBGjLQ-U

I'm not 100% sure whether it was Paul who did that impression, but he certainly did the Tony Blackburn impressions (Blackburn did the very original Golden Hour, but with a slightly different format)

Hey Aled! Came across the T&Cs for Celebrity Raspberry as you were talking about them on the show this morning and saw that #2 said that the game will finish next month. Does that mean that ‘Where Am I?’ is on the cards for a replacement? Or have you finally thought of a feature for ‘Air Moyles’? :D

Chris is right that the majority of our listeners will know of songs before their time but ita those songs that should be played (ie in the last hour - the GOLDEN songs) not the first where you'll play 6-8 songs from the year - they won't all be Golden if you've not heard of the majority of them.

I appreciate there are probably loads of surveys and masses of focus group research that back up what you say, but it makes me a little sad that there's a cut-off for golden hour songs based on how much you think they'd be remembered or recognised.

I grew up listening to the stuff my mum listened to, which was the stuff my dad had listened to when they were much, much younger. So when I was the age that you say people would start to remember music, I was hearing Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, The Drifters, Sinatra, The Beatles and many, many more.

Most of them had either died or disbanded 10 years before I was born.

Surely it's the songs themselves that make the years golden, or the memorable events of the year. Not necessarily the fact that you remember the songs as being your contemporary.

Ah, but that's my point. Those songs should be played but in the second half hour. Could you imagine a whole half hour from 1955!? How many of those songs would you know?
#437036
It would be nice if that second half of the hour could be opened up to listener choices, rather than just team choices. I don't really know how that would work in practice but it would further extend the possibility of hearing a great song from years ago that you weren't expecting, which I think is just what a golden hour should be.

You're asking the wrong man that question, dude :)

"Ain't That A Shame" – Pat Boone
"Band Of Gold" – Don Cherry
"Cry Me a River" – Julie London
"Earth Angel" – The Crew Cuts
"The Great Pretender" – The Platters
"I Hear You Knocking" – Gale Storm
"Memories Are Made Of This" – Dean Martin
"Rock Around The Clock" – Bill Haley & His Comets
"Ain't That A Shame" – Fats Domino
"Folsom Prison Blues" – Johnny Cash
"Tutti Frutti" – Little Richard

I reckon I could sing them all word for word ;)

I get your point, although I think you're taking it a little to the extremes - I'm not suggesting there should be a Golden Hour from 1955, but would a once a month Golden Hour from 1987 or 1988 be so bad? Especially given that most of the people listening after 9 must, by dint of logistics, be towards the upper end of the demographic (or even beyond it).

That would be an amazing Golden Hour.

I have a question Aled, what on earth are you going to do about Dave and his big mouth!
#437061
Bet she's pregnant. Bet you.

That's the first thing I thought of too. But then if tonight's drinks are partly a leaving do for her (presuming she'd be 'leaving' to start her maternity leave) then surely she would be far enough along in her pregnancy that they'd have mentioned it on air by now.
#437140
Today's blog says she's having a big drink tonight so I think it's safe to assume she's not pregnant.

I'm disappointed by the news to be honest. The show has had a few changes recently from Carrie/Rachel to Tina/Sam and as we are just getting used to Sam and hearing her on air she's off.

Does it really take a lot to get used to hearing someone on air?

After a couple of links I'm usually pretty comfortable with whoever is 'new'. It's not really much of an upheaval is it?

Not so much a question, more some feedback.

MASSIVE thumbs up for not fading to a static promo shot and for keeping with the 'studio cam' while songs are on.

The live feed is superb. As usual.

I think this one was answered on the show today: gaffer tape :D
#437407
Gaffa tape has it uses. Its great to tape peoples mouth shut just like Dave's mouth this morning.

Hi Aled
I'm sure this has been asked and answered dozens of times, but I'm just wondering what the status is on future Red Button visual broadcasts? I know Chris is up for making it more permanent, and I'm sure the marathon show proved that people love watching it.
Are there any future plans? Is the BBC reluctant to do it? And would your show be allowed to take over BBC3, while it isnt on in the morning?

I think BBC3 shares a channel or whatever it's called with CBBC or CBeebies, so that wouldn't be possible.
#437750
No it doesn't, BBC Three, CBBC and CBeebies all have their own channel number - certainly on Sky.
#437751
I think what he's saying though is that obviously there are limited channels on freeview and even though they show up as different channel numbers then they actually run off the same sort of thing, so effectively they can't both be on at the same time as there is not enough room on freeview until analogue is completely switched off

Aled,

Do you think that your counting down during the last clip of this morning's big weekend ticket competition confused and distracted the lass who lost?

Don't get me wrong, I actually preferred that she lost, but I did think there was quite a kerfuffle going on during the last clip which didn't seem entirely fair to me.
