Always wanted to know something about the show? This is the place to 'Ask Aled'!

A bit of a geeky question, but I'm increasingly wondering how the handovers work. I've heard it referred to a number of times where a 'button' is pressed to hand over control. Does this mean only one studio is on air at a time and the sound from the other studio is turned up? At what time does the handover happen? Is it always after the closing jingle or does it depend on whenever chris decides to hand control over?

I can't guarentee this is how R1 do it but the way I did it at my community station you'd wait for a moment when everyone wasn't talking (for us it was normally during the news, which we got streamed to us) fade the playing audio to the same level, then handed over control. I would imagine Moyles does it during the vocals at the end of the closing jingles or the pips. Then the 'in control' studio fades up the other one and obviously down again at the end of the handover.

I'm guessing that the other studio is on a fader in the first studio that Moyles hits a button on to transfer control over to. Jo Whiley used to start trying to play music during the handover and Moyles was all "naw, im fading you out" so he must be able to control the output till he hits a button somewhere.

There is a correct way and an incorrect way to do it at Radio 1.

We do it the incorrect way :)

Dev fades our studio up and pays the 6:26 news jingle, Dom and Tina talk. And then from that point on our studio plays everything out. Other news beds, end jingle, pips and cheesy opener.

Once we're out of the pips and the cheesy opener's started they 'offer' network and I accept it.

We have a switcher at the back of the studio that has whatever networks you want on it. Ours shows Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra. So if there's ever in the news weird things happening like something that happened with Westwood and another with Radio 4 it's all the networks offering network at the same key junctions.

Hi Aled, I've been wondering about this for awhile and decided to finally ask you. On the show I sometimes hear Chris and you talking about the stats on how many people listened to the podcast the previous week. I would like to know if it counts as a download (or some other term) for your stats if a person listens to the podcast through the show podcast page and clicks on the Play button, as opposed to someone actually downloading it from that same page. Thanks in advance for sharing how this works. - BBQ

Good question, I'd like to know the answer to that as well! I've always assumed it's a yes but I should check, especially if we've just started promoting it.

Thank you for the reply Aled!
I might have Stumped The Aled, although I didn't mean to. It was something that I've been wondering about. If you only get numbers/stats from downloads, rather than people playing it directly off the podcast page, I will start downloading them each week instead.
Have a great vacation! -BBQ

Who says stuff like that?

Well I don't know about Aled, but I would imagine most averagely intelligent adults wouldn't have any trouble ignoring or dismissing the idle ramblings of some silly kid on Twitter. Or on any other online board.

I'm sure you're right, I was just interested as to know. :)

I'm sure he'll be along to answer at some point! Welcome by the way, I didn't post in the "newbies" thread, so here will do.

I read it more as "Aled, there are a lot of critics out there who would love to see Chris and the team fail. Do you ever feel threatened by it?".

Hence why I thought it was a good question. I imagine it must be difficult sometimes to switch off from the negativity regardless of any success being enjoyed.

I imagine it must.

Not real, the fact 'she' is savvy enough to contact Dave's WIFE smacks of the same nutter who pretended to be Comedy Dave and now Dave himself has relented needs a new little 'crusade'.

 I do love that Jayne, Aled & Chris himself are following her, probably to see how nutty she is. Someone should start a campaign to close down here beloved Radio 4, although we have lives and she doesn't :D

Bloody Hell, she wants to get some attention and you guys are giving her that. I can see a day coming when I can't reply to people because it gets everyone else' attention! :)

We may be the biggest radio show in the UK (on and off) but we still have five times as many people not listening to us than do in the UK so it's easy to get used to the idea that not everyone likes us. The amount of people wanting to kick the show or stop us being on air are tiny however and doesn't really happen that often at all. I get a little more sensitive to people knocking Chris as he's a friend and it's not very nice to see.

How do you feel about people knocking Scott Mills?

I have sucessfully not listened to the radio this week, so thus have avoided disapointment and also (until now) not slagged off Scott, but it just really isn't the same!

I really enjoyed Scott on his miles from hell but can't listen to more than 20mins of his show without getting peed off.

If you say it upsets you Al, I'm sorry, I don't think I'd be able to stop, even for you!
