Tuesday Night 10:30pm Ch4
Not sure if it'll be as powerful in a primetime terestorial slot as it was at 3am on E4 after many many beers, but never the less Channel 4 seem to be holding all the cards this summer with Big Brother and the like, while the other Channels begin tapping at their temples and making with the goofy face. Banzai is straight out of the 'Trigger Happy', 'Ali G', genre and if you like the idea of an odd looking Japanese fellow trying to shake the hands of unsuspecting celebritys for as long as possible make sure you tuner in tommorrow...

i simply cannot wait. The idea of harold bishop playing "knock down ginger" in some funny costume strikes me as almost certainly the greatest idea in all of television history.

[This message has been edited by Monkey (edited 19 June 2001).]

I've seen snippets of it on E for Edge and I fear it may not live up to your expectations - but it'll still be very funny I reckon. I give it 5 months before it becomes unfashionable - like most of the Channel 4 comedy you mention.
the_dr

very true about the unfashionable thing dr.
me & my mates used to watch ali g when he very first started on the 11 o'clock show. we got so pissed off with other people going on about it when he started to become fashionable. we then hated the show way before the first video came out.
saw some of banzai on that e4 preview programme that was on ch4 late at night when e4 first came out. It was quite good.
Three are ugly, but one is beauuuutiful.
-I should really decide whether to start my sentences in my replies with capitals or not. yeah :)

Personally, I watch comedy if it's funny - not because it's fashionable, etc. I too watched the 11ocs when Mr G was on it, and I too cringe whenever somebody does an Ali G impression (as exposed by the Royle Family) - but I still think it's funny. I think it's so pretencious to hate a show just because it's become populist and commericialised - hate it if it's crap.
Sasha Barron-Cohen himself, I suspect, is pissed off with his success. Anything that is *that* popular is bound to have a backlash, and his came a few months ago. His challenge will now be to prove he can do other things appart from Ali G.
the_dr

we hated the show, not being pretentious, but because we thought if people heard us talking about it they'd think we like it for all the stupid reasons. We liked it because it was very funny, but, living in essex, loads of gimps were going around - not thinking mr cohen was actually taking the complete **** out of them themselves - but was just funny because they think "oh wow he's talking about a spliff, that's drugs, i like smoking spliff and grage music, that's funny, me laugh good" We didn't want anything to do with these ****s, and the tv show was pretty crap in comparison to what it used to be like, so we washed our hands of the whole affair.
rant over

Ali G yes is popular and funny. Borat is even funnier especially when he was at that toffs Regatta. Asking that bloke who had a 'nice moustache' if he 'went with other men' was very funny.

Sasha new character, a gay Austrian with blonde hair is absolutely hilarious. It's at the end of the Ali G, Aiiii video - he goes to a heavy metal concert and asks similar questions to Borats toff questions. Very funny.
the_dr

Banzai isn't bad - it kept me smiling, especially the shakey hand man.
