there's hardly any w's in latin, the plonkers made words like via but went and pronounced it wia. i used to always get told off by my latin teacher for not saying v's as w's.

okay. i'll stop with the german (but if you EVER pull out the french i'll beat you down so hard auf deutsch so help me...), but tjd, "it's haribo macht froh und erwaschener ebenso" froh=happy, frau=mrs./lady (as in lord/ladies). kids eating haribo don't get turned into weird old bitchy women. look- klaus ate haribo and is now frau stammfichte!

sorry. i actually just finished some haribo happy colas. mm, brekkie!

It's completely opposite in German
e.g Wie, meaning how, is said vie.

Bloody foreign languages!

right. there's a lot more going on with why the german w is a fricative other than the latin v. for instance in the protogermanic languages of old saxon, gothing, and old high german, it was still pronounced like the enlgish w. during the period of middle high german, up to now high german, it shifted. let's all talk about the GREAT VOWEL SHIFT!

btw- i'm a student of germanic historical linguistics
