Look who's celebrating their fifth birthday.

Yeah, I know - it's worse than Kendra's thread about the TalkSport bloke who won't talk about other DJs.

I've been using the internet for 5 years now... but it's only in the last year I have actually started using Google as the only search engine I ever use.

im on at least 7 years, and probably google for 3. i used to use altavista before that, but in comparison it sucks. the fact that google has a monopoly worries me, but it just so much better than ought else

I've been online for about 7 or 8 years and I've always used yahoo and will continue to. I know that it's powered by google these days but I'd still rather use yahoo that google direct.

How exactly does Google have a monopoly? A lot of people useit but lots of people still use Yahoo, Lycos, Alta Vista, Webcrawler, Ask Jeeves.....

I use dogpile.com, It's great. It's a metasearch so searches loads of search engines for you then displays all the results.

If you add up the statistics for google and all the sites that are powered by google, you have most of the market.

I used to always use Altavista but then they changed the front page so, over a modem, it took longer to load. Used Yahoo for a while but I got in the habit of liking the minimalist design and Google is best for that. It's the fastest homepage that's also useful.
Oh and it's easier to spell than altavista :D

It's a combination of goggle, ie to stare with wide eyes and googol which is 10 to the power of 100.

Quite clever from a marketing standpoint (although not being in marketing it's not really a standpoint, more a thought).

When I discovered Google I never looked back. I've only been using it since I started uni though, I'd never heard of it before that.

Damn I'm bored. Just did a search on google.co.uk for search engines. Google came 6th. Altavista was first.
Only another 13 mins to go until I can leave by the clock by my boss's desk......

I managed to download the google toolbar for internet explorer so it gives me a nice little search box without having to go to the google.com web page - it also blocks popups, which is great. Although my Norton Internet Security is supposed to do that, but doesnt.
