Me again

I recently won a years connection to BT Broadband. I got it today and decided to install it myself because I didn't think it would be too difficult  When I start up my computer it now says:

The Windows Registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its inunstall or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that applicatin to replace the missing file.

<<some word here>>
Preass a key to continue.

I know there is a scary way to fix it by going through ms - dos, but that sounds too technical for me and I might balls it up more.

Is the SYSTEM.INI file an important part of the computer because it seems to run ok without it?

Still can't get Broadband to install either.

Are you saying you've deleted the System.ini file? I wouldn't recommend doing this. What OS are you using?

Have you installed anything else besides BT Broadband recently?

Don't delete your sysem.ini file.

Have you removed your dial up modem? That could be the problem, make sure you uninstalled it properly.

It says that you have Windows 98 earlier, which really relies on this file. Go to C:/windows and find the system.ini there, and try to find any bits referring to old devices. If you change it go so safe mode and make sure you backup.

I didn't delete it intentionally, I'm not sure how it did it really. All i've tried to install in the past couple of days in the broadband software and I can't without the Windows '98 SE disk.

Thinking about it, as you are connected now it must still be there. Do you not have a Windows CD? That could be the problem as it might have half installed.

Try windows update if that can help if not then ask the newsgroup people in btopenworld.broadband.support even though they specialise in BT-Yahoo! but I'm sure they can help
Also you need to connect via the news.btopenworld.com as a news group

I don't have the Windows 98 disk, which means I can't install the Broadband on my pc as it needs loads of driver files from it.

Its so like me to win a prize I can't use.

I've managed to download most of the files from various sites, I've still got two I can't find anywhere:

ISDN.HLP
NDISWAN.VXD

Anyone got any ideas where I might find them?

was your computer a ready-built system (like time or IBM) then the tell windows to find them in C:\windows\options\cabs
If not then the ISDN.HLP file isn't really needed as it's just a help file
and NDISWAN.VXD should be found on a Dial up networking upgrade on the microsoft download site

I finally got it working about 2 hours ago, after going through loads of websites over 3 nights looking for the files from the Windows 98 disk it needed. Then, when it was all installed it kept disconnecting, which I worked out tonight was a problem at the main socket downstairs. It seems to be working great now.

I still have the start up problem, its only a few files that are missing, not the whole SYSTEM.INI file. vredir.vxd, dfs.vxd and msnp.32.dll. Everything seems to be working ok so far, but I'll hopefully get it fixed soon.
