Sara Cox only discovered she was being replaced as Radio 1's breakfast show presenter an hour before the decision was made public, it emerged today.

The Radio 1 DJ, who lost the slot to her colleague Chris Moyles after losing 500,000 listeners, has revealed she was in the dark about the decision to end her contract early until she turned up for lunch with the station's controller, Andy Parfitt, and found her agent waiting for her.

"I was meant to be having lunch with Andy and he's like, 'Melanie's here'. She's my agent. I knew straight away because she only comes in to deal with my contract," Cox told Heat magazine.

Asked whether her agent had known of the decision before her, Cox replied: "Yeah. Just in case I started screaming or something."

But the DJ, whose contract to host the breakfast show was not due to run out until next April, insisted she was not sacked over the loss of listeners to her show.

Cox, who was told of the decision just two months after the station's listening figures dipped

below 10 million for the first time in its history, said Radio 1 had asked her to leave early because it was planning an advertising campaign.

It would, she said, not have made sense to promote her show ahead of her departure.

"All the papers were like, 'Sacked! Axed! Dropped!' and people were looking at me in the street like, 'Are you alright?'. I was like, 'Hang on, I'm going a few months early because of an advertising campaign'. My contract was ending in April anyway," she said.

In the interview, Cox also revealed she initially thought she was being replaced by Chris Evans on the breakfast show.

She said she immediately asked Parfitt who was taking over: "I just wanted to make sure it's going into good hands. And he was like, 'It's Chris'.

"I got completely confused and went, 'Chris Evans?' - and he went, 'No, Moyles'. And I was like, 'Oh Moylesy, sorry'."

She said she was pleased he had got the job, but she admitted to being "pissed off" at Moyles's public campaigning for the early morning slot.

Moyles boasted last year that he could do the job better, saying: "I could absolutely kick anybody's arse on breakfast, ever."

"Breakfast is a bit of a balancing act. He'll probably be quite nervous at this stage because he has been banging on about being the saviour of Radio 1. It's like, 'OK, here you go then!' He's got a lot more on his plate - no fat joke intended."

Now I don't liek Sara Cox but thats a bit unfair that she wasn't told about it untill an hour before.

I love the way she has a pop at him at the end too. Sounds like deep down she is pretty bitter about it.

How long did you know about breakfast before it was announced.

When Avid Merrion came into the show, during the songs did he stay in character or did you talk to him as Lee?

Half an hour!

Yes really. We were told at 2, an e-mail went around Radio 1 at 2:15 and Newsbeat broke the story at 2:30.

yeah but chris obviously knew beforehand as he urged everyone to buy his celebdaq shares the day before...

also, the biggest load of bollocks i've heard all week:

theres obviously a bit of rivalry between sara and chris. i think she is just pissed off that he thinks he is a better dj than her...but she should really face facts and accept that it's true. as much as i dislike her i wish her all the best in the afternoons but i for one won't be listening. I hate to say this AGAIN but it should be Scott Mills who gets afternoons and coxy weekends. ah well, maybe parfitt will finally see sense when she loses more listeners in the afternoon next year...

SARA COX IS PREGGERS

Well from this it seems that the afternoons will probably only be a short term gig after all. Hopefully when she goes off to have the baby she'll swap permanently with Scott Mills then. Here's to hoping anyway....but thankyou to Jon Carter for finally getting her off our radios.

Poor Kid.

I was actually surprised to read that she only knew an hour ebfore the announcement. I though t it would of been planned quite a while before and everyone invloved would of been discussed to to sort out any contract changes. Eg. I wouldn't of thought Chris would move to Breakfast without Dave, and what if Dave didn't want to move after the announcement was made?

How long do Djs normally have off when they are preggers then?

Can be anything up to 26 weeks. Come April when her Contract ends she'll be something like 5 month preggers - so who knows what she'll decide to do.

Maybe afternoon radio will suit her more - people have got fed up with her in the mornings.

Just seems really rushed - I wouldnt want to be told half hour before it was made official to the public that I was losing the Breakfast Show to another DJ.

Rushed is the word - it's one of those things that one they've made the decision it has to be done ASAP - whatever the cost. Plus the mandatory bad planning from management that comes from any company.

If she is three months pregnant and she only knew about being replaced two months ago I assume she was going to leave the breakfast show anyway.

They will probably give her ages off like Zoe ball, and lets hope that she never comes back - like Zoe Ball.

Even if she does come back to the station after the babys born, thats still a few months of Scott Mills in the afternoon instead of Coxy :D

With any luck though, she'll take this oppertunity to leave full time.

All is right with Radio 1 once more.....

. I hadn't a clue on many months she was into her pregnant.

I remember saying something about it was time she had a baby when it was announced Moyles was going to Breakfast..
