You quite possibly know better than me, but I'm fairly certain you're allowed to copy any music that you already own for backup perposes. It's certainly true with VCRs and software, don't see why CDs should be any different.

Making any copy in any form, wheter or not you own the original or not, doesnt make a difference. When you buy the record you buy a copy of it, you don't own the copyright to it.
But as I said, as far as making a copy for the car is concerned, no one cares. The record companies have bigger fish to fry.
